Brad Pit and Joker question
September 29, 2008, 05:48:27 pm
Have many people flashed these two problems? I know Lamiche did BP on a Petzl thing if my memory serves me correctly, but the Joker??

Just curious as a mate of mine flashed them both early this morning and I thought it might not a very common occurence...

The beast in question is young Scotty boy McLellan - works at the Edge and you'll often see him down at the Works. I told him he's doing well, but thought I'd check for cert that this was actually quite an achievement. He'll be pleased no doubt!

If it's true, then it's gotta be the first flash of the Joker. If Lamiche flashed BP then, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the only one to date. Well, until now.

I'm almost equally impressed with the fact that he lives and works so near to these problems yet has saved them for the flash! I can barely think of a hard problem which I haven't atleast had a little look at.

Well done that man.

If not, then the words "Chinny reckon" spring to mind.

Now I'm not saying its not true, and I have only ever seen him climbing once (and that was at the cworks) but it would seem that he has come on shit loads since I saw him if this is true.

I've had the pleasure of being burnt off by people who I've actually witness flash fb8a and it was clearly obvious that they were up to the job and such things were capable, whereas I climbed with this chap at the works at the beginning of the summer and we were level pegging.

Again, I'm not saying he didnt, and according to his 8a.nu scorecard its not his first 8a flash, but I dont think based on what I saw in May/June time that this guy is an 8a flashing wad.

Crikey, the knives are out. Could this be a case of not quite understanding the terminology? I daresay folk would think I was shit if they saw me at a wall. Not that I'm up to flashing either of these problems - I can't even do the Joker.

Brad Pit has had at least 2 flashes, I'm pretty sure more. Jvan was the first I think, back in 2002 or 3, I can't remember. On his second go, in may 2008, he did it again. Waddage.

Likewise JB, I imagine the vast majority of people are deeply disappointed when they witness my flailings. If people then choose to take a "chinny-rack-on" view of my ticklist then so be it.

By your logic Dobbin neither me, Jim, Foley or your good self could crush 6b....

Its a fair point! its unfair to make a value judgement about someones ability based on seeing them climb once at a climbing wall, which by my own admission barely resembles outdoor climbing. For all I know this guy might be ferociously strong in the fingers and no good at volume wrestling, and hence a contender for flashing these problems.

I hope he has climbed both of these problems on his first go, if he has then its an absolutely great effort and should be in the news thread. What is his secret?

I stumbled across it last night. Malt loaf. The old favorite becomes crushing food!

I would have thought The Joker would be on for the flash by someone with strong fingers and good campus ability. In comparison to other 8As I mean, it's the kind of thing nu skool training beasts should crush?

Good effort!

As people have said above, its not that unusual for BP to get done first go, or at least within a few goes, and to be honest I'm amazed that the joker hasn't been flashed before, for the very reason Mr Sharpe states above. But clearly for one person to do both on the same day, and in september, is a notable effort.

He strayed from the path and tried the cinnamon loaf out. Claims that he has been lacing his loaf with 'roids are totally unfounded though...

Amazing to think that the Joker was one of the hardest problems on grit back in '96 when Jerry first did it (I think after returning from the Real Thing sessions as I remember reading he was pissed that he did not managed to capture the first ascent for that particular film and had to wait for Hard Grit the following year to showboat in front of the cameras). I guess its hard reputation is now gone as its had umpteen ascents. If the flash was by the original method with the left toe on then that's even more impressive as I have heard that this is a smidge harder than the new skool foot off campus method (originally given 8a+ the toe on way).

I actually know scott and a whilst I didnt see the ascents I wouldnt doubt them. He's only been climbing 2.5 years so hes not been saving them for the flash, just hadnt got round to trying them.
If you want an idea of his form over the past few weeks check out his 8a.nu, although for anyone who's spent years projecting anything in the peak its quite disheartening.
As hes a UKBer I think we should avoid the witch hunt and asking the man himself.
Sascotty, your moment of greatness?
