Anyone used 18mm MDF instead of ply for their board? Its a lot cheaper. Just wondering if it had any cons?

i wouldn't. everyone uses ply for a reason, and it ain't just cosmetic. I'd be concerned about pulling t-nuts through MDF. if you lay off the slimfast you'll be able to afford it.

Don't do it. I remember someone using it for part of a board set up once and it just disintegrated.

my mate used mdf. and in these damp climates within 2 months he had ripped holds clean of the board, by shuttering ply, really cheap £12 for a sheet in the right palces, if you go to your timber merchant you can ask to look at it and just pick all the best sheets free from filler

Went to Savoy this morning, the cheapest around. For treated ply it was £29.95 and the shuttering ply was £19.95, it was appauling quality.... Ill stick with the £29.95 stuff. My walls only 16ft / 10ft so shouldn't cost too much. Ill probably round it up to 8 ft wide as the sides are dead space anyway for holds.

you shouldn't really be paying 30bananas a pop for woody ply. try a different merchant (some are shit). i paid about £12 per sheet, it was the cheapest stuff they had and was great, not much filler, no noticable voids or pull-throughs. the expensive stuff is effectivley going to tripple the cost.

or failing that, go round building sites scrounging packing ply.

have a look at builders merchants. Also you can go as low as 15mm which would cut cost down, I have thats size, but the price in france is £80 per sheet for 18mm, managed to get him down to £50 for 15mm, so be lucky, and my board has 20 sheets of the stuff

one thing is if you use 15mm stick in a bit more frame work, do you need tnuts and bolts?, I have thousands lying around left over stock...
