Encouraging temps out today folks, not long to go now...

Coincidentally, I was asked today 'how you know when to call the grit?' Well the answer, as most of you know, is far from simple - careful observance of the signs, part inspiration, part divination, part sacrifice and ritual. But it did make me realise that in this wall-bred age there may be a few younger folk here who don't even know the most basic of the old legends, and rush about looking for Quail-headed crows without even knowing where they might live, or what they might be about. So here's a little primer, perhaps the oldest of the legends, to whet your appetite for the cold to come:

Props to Grimer.  When is the Grimependium out?

Picture isn't working, this does not reassure the drooling hordes....

Bloody freezing this weekend but I think it an anomaly.

Pah.

A good month off yet.

And the rest...recent summer seem to have "enjoyed" a late warm spell.

I'm just waiting for the first frost of the year to kill the midges. Out in the Peak last week, think the bite count was in the 50s when I got home and they're still itchy.

Really cool temps up the Pass last night, I was climbing with three layers on at one point. Friction was so good I nailed an ace new 7A+.

Mind you, feels warm again today...

Went to Shipley Glen this morning. It's definitely still summer as this happened.... :spank: (ps this has nothing to do with the local dogging scene)

Given that I've recently moved so that I'm now a six hour drive from the grit, please can it not be called this year.  Oh, apart from a week in late October when I'm in the Peak - some crisp conditions then would be fine.

... and anyway, it's only the beginning of September FFS - surely that's way too early.

Got nibbled by a couple of them in the back garden last night. Hell on the west coast still.

I knew when I type that that someone would managed to dig some euphemisms out if it.

I originally wrote "got nibbled by a couple in the garden" and changed it becasue it was too much of an open goal.

A month on, what's the crow-headed tortoise saying? Hot westerlies at the mo but switching around to NNE for the weekend...

Brimham yesterday looked top notch from inside the car, but on stepping out it was clear that the call is a way off...way, way to claggy and humid, and what little wind there was was light and tepid.

I for one am hoping that the Caller has consulted a social media strategist after the lime call debacle...

Aye there definitely shouldn't be a call, official or otherwise, but I'm just wondering how the omens and signs are doing...

Got my copy of Summit through the letter box and it had a large picture stating the Grit had been called...

That'll teach you to clean your oven on a crisp Saturday. The grit gods were angry you weren't there to appreciate them on Saturday so punished you with clag and humidity (not to mention incorrect use of the word 'to' you self proclaimed 'son of two teachers! :tease:').

Where was crisp on Saturday?  Was in a t-shirt cursing the greasiness most of the day!

I'm starting to think, like Lord Stark, that you children of the summer may have forgotten what winter feels like!

Saw the humidity estimates and went high and breezy. Rylstone and Barden Fell were lovely this weekend  :P
