Big news indeed! This being the problem originally graded V16, and containing "the hardest move he [Fred] has ever done."

wow. The concentration of beastliness in this thread is immense... Nicole, Lamiche, TerraceGhost...  So who suggested the v15 grade? Lamiche?  God, He's such a beast. I have a whole lotta love for Lamiche and Nicole (and you terraceghost!).

Thanks for the news.

Perhaps the V16 grade for Amandala was pure speculation on behalf of the previously linked blogger. I found this:

Quote

Translattion: This probem was opened in 2005 and has never really received listing (my research). The only thing I found is the symbol of V15/8c!
Nicole once said that this line was the hardest he had done, but that was before Terremer (V15/8c).

Which means you think that Lamiche only has one testicle, Fred Nicole is on drugs, and you have a full head of hair like myself. Dream on, baldy!

It's nice to see the spot lgiht on Fred again.  Are there access issues with this one - SA could really do with an Allemansratten.

I've spent an afternoon at Murgtal.  Lovely spot in a beautiful valley that is easy to access from the motorway.  Unfortunately we got rained off after a few hours but the climbing is nice on a range of holds but mainly edges.  There is lots of potential hidden in the woods there and it's also a great spot for lower grade climbers with accessible problems near the road.  The few harder things that I did do were all good and the other ones that I scoped out looked like they had quality moves.  I'd say its worth a visit when driving to say Magic from Zurich.

this looks like a good effort but the naming of the problem leave something to be desired: we've already got The Mandala, so why would we want just Amandala? Bad effort fred, bad effort.

Actually its not called Amandala but Amandla. Apparently the name comes from an old apartheid term in south africa meaning "power to the people".

Amandla is a Xhosa and Zulu word meaning "power". The word was a popular rallying cry in the days of resistance against Apartheid, used by the African National Congress and its allies. The leader of a group would call out "Amandla!" and the crowd would respond with "Awethu"[1] or "Ngawethu!"[2] (To us), completing the South African version of the rallying cry Power to the People![3]. The word is still associated with struggles against oppression.

Mandla, which is derived from "amandla", is also a common first name in South Africa.

Not to be confused with Umkhonto we Sizwe (the spear of the nation) who are the military section of the ANC, and a Paarl Rock route HK Stu and I climbed in the last days of the last millenium.

Aye, lot steeper than it looked. I had first shot and failed dismally, then HK Stu did good and I seconded. Splinter of the Mind's Eye is also awesome. There has been loads of development since you were there btw. Some nice bolted slab routes, and Little Dutch Boy has had the old bolts (that were made from a bed frame) removed and has been rebolted a bit more safely.

LDB had new bolts when we were there. I did it with a Big Dutch Girl.

*sigh* I'm missing climbing in exciting foreign venues.
