Core exercises
February 21, 2008, 03:26:55 pm
Ok i know all the normal ones and stuff but i cant do those right now.

I dislocated my right shoulder last week and want to work on my core while i cant do much else.

So exercises that dont require the use of my shoulders at all but give you the core of the hulk!

Any ideas?

Cheers David

Gym ball.

Lie on back with feet on gymball, with thighs at 90 degrees to floor, and lower legs parrallel to floor. As shown in below diagram

0___/''''(Ball)

Extend hips so you end up with only shoulders on the floor.
Build up by holding for longer or doing more sets and reps etc. Then move ball further away, and so forth.

I always think of extending out on the Tete du cul du chien when I do this excersise..

Damn, bad luck with the shoulder! Hope it heals swiftly.

Surely you can do the same exercises on your front and sides? (though lying on sides might hurt shoulder...)
Hang weights off your legs when you are watching TV?
Get someone to drop coconuts on your stomach like van damme?
Get one of those electrocution mahines and zap yourself silly?

good thread this.
id like some more exersizes to do when bored.
i do alot of push ups sit ups(not that amazing)
but the best thing i think is hanging pull up bar and pulling knees thru to touch bar and back down to straight.
anymore?

Doesn't help monkey boy with the dislocated shoulder, but i'm finding leg-raises pretty good for the old abs.
As per philos comment - hang bar at 90deg lock, raise legs keeping them straight and keeping the lock and back in good form, lower and repeat.
When that gets easy hang weight from your ankles and continue.
When that gets easy start aiming for the front lever.
When that gets easy, congratulations - you are now nails.
(i am still at stage one of this programme  :-[ )

Also, similar exercise on bar, but one leg at a time, cross right leg as far as poss out left, curling left leg under the body - sort of a fly-kick motion (but real slow) then repeat with left.

Key to both these is doing it slow controlled and concentrate on keeping good form throughout.

Pilates criss-cross exercise (holding at each turn for 2 seconds), when shoulder's bit better, mind.

I am not sure how this will feel on your bad shoulder but for working your core from another direction try these...

Do a headstand, once balanced comfortably lower your (straight) legs to the floor and back up. Basically this is an inverted leg raise but it works all your stabilising muscles of your core. I just tried ten of these and I can feel it in my lower back abs and obliques.

For variety do circles with your legs instead of straight up and down.

 :)
