De-dusting prints while scanning
January 18, 2008, 10:24:28 am
Alright, just been scanning in a load of old prints and found that (due to my lack of care admittedly) quite a few of them have got dust on them that's not visible until I scan the picture in.

Just wondering if anyone's got any tips on removing the dust - can I just run a Mr Sheen-y cloth over the print, or have I knackered it for good?

Cheers,

Tom

compressed air before you scan. also wipe down the scanner glass and blow dust off it too. learn how to use the clone stamp and healing tools in PS. you can tidy pictures up surprisingly quickly once you know how. careful with healing though as it does leave marks. varying sizes of clone stamp are much better and keep resampling (hold down alt and click) to make sure it's accurate.

In addition to all cofe suggests I've used the 'dust and scratches' function thats part of the 'noise' filter in photoshop... seems to work ok on small blemishes  dunno how good it is if you want really high quality repro though...
