I have been told in a proper political leak kind of way by a person who shall remain nameless, but who is privy to as yet unpublished details of salfords regeneration plan, that in 3 years broughton sports centre will be demolished and rebuilt with the destruction of broughton wall!

This post is to do the following;

Find someone at the BMC who can find out if this plan is true. (Jaquesie??)
Find someone with web design skills to set up a petition on a website thats not shit and not just a facebook group.
Start the ball rolling towards some kind of plan where the wall is preserved or purchased by climbers/ the BMC.

The destruction would mean the end of;

The best training venue in the NW.
A unique training venue - dont mention Glossop wall.
The only quality bouldering training venue in Salford/ manchester.
The only training venue in Salford/manchester at a reasonable price.

Some people have been going for 15 years and still arent bored!!!


PS.  I dont think the bendcrete concrete ones can be moved

  NOOO. I would be up for getting involved in helping with buying/moving the wall if it comes to that. Such an ace wall. Although Glossop wall is better....

glossop wall is better if you want to fall break your back on the wall behind then bounce over the wall and fall 15ft on to some folk doing aerobics! broughton has more space, good mats and better problems the only down side is the burning cars dodgy scalies outside and the fact they have dismantled the woodie. It is a quality wall to learn how to climb!

The woodie has been rebuilt in the main hall - its just been painted and the holds should be back on over the next week or 2.

I've also heard that Broughton will be going, the date I was told was September 2009 so 3 years would be an improvement!  It would be great if something could be done to save it but realistically I think we should be thankful that we've had such a specialized training facility in such an unlikely venue for so long.

i remember my uni days -  they would pull a net curtain over and people would play badminton next to you - and you couldn't use the campus board during a match.

Falling into the aerobics sweat pit would be part of the fun! Agree with you apart from the better problems - Both equally good. Although I'm prob biased cos I made up half of the ones at Glossop.

Aye think its 9-3 depending on other events at the place. Was a cycle racing meet on last weekend so was open past 3 both days.

This is gutting, along with the Walker Spur, Broughton 6c is my big lifetime ambition. I know its easy to get misty eyed about something becuas eit is the underdog (compared to modern walls with fancy cafes and moveable holds but this wall really *is* brilliant and totally different to anything else around. I've never once got bored there

Typical - just got back into using Broughton and now they plan to close it! Unbelievable - great value, great wall and a load of good folks go down there so the atmosphere is pretty good too and...it's affordable.

Mind you, this has been on the cards for years and it did have a reprieve some time back. This doesn't alter the fact that it will be a big loss of a great facility. I really like the spartan nature and don't need any frills or flapjacks.

I'm gutted.
