In reply to post 157: I reckon that Font would be at the top of the list. The place I really wanna go is the South US Chattenooga (sp!) sandstone. Looks brilliant, and apparantly a nice friendly place too.

In reply to post 158: I was watching the teletext last night actually (no internet in our house, like) and flights to Atlanta which is the airport for Chatanoga I think, were going for around 270 quid then, but I've seen them in autumn for 170 ish, which is probably a good time to go there....

In reply to post 161: And from 27th Oct, BMI are doing cheap flight to Paris from Donnington - easy, cheap weekends in Font!

In reply to post 157: Castle Hill looks the most beautiful, should get some pics up tomorrow of the place. Where else? Koh Tao in Thailand, the Seychelles, so many places, so little cash...

In reply to post 166: Is it Ailfroide?

In reply to post 167: no its some place near Salzburg Friend of mine recently stumbled on an area of boulders about 10 square miles in Bolivia - good quality sandstone (the compact fine grained type) anything between 3-7m in height, flat landings and all within spitting distance of the road (which unfortunately happened to be a dirt track in the middle of no where) The photos of it looked awesome

In reply to post 167: Hmmm... not sure, but was talking to Tim Hulley in Outside yesterday, and he was recommending Ailfroide. Said everything was Font 6c up though, so not a lot to warm up on. Nice lake with beaches about 1/2 hour drive south apparantly. Lots of people were talking about Sardinia though, so might go there - sounds wicked.

In reply to post 168: That sounds superb - never been to South America, but would love to. Wouldn't want to hurt yourself in the middle of backcountry Bolivia though, would you? Cheap coke though ;-)

In reply to post 164: Yeah - Castle Hill is THE spot. I would definitely recommend a visit. Can beat the clean rock, good landings, good weather and cheap living (on £££s that is). Looking forward to seeing those pictures.

In reply to post 173: There's some pics at the top of the photo page now - not many, but gives a good idea of the scenery. More to come next week.

In reply to post 184: I know I go on about it a lot, but there is sooooo much untouched stuff in South Africa. StuartM can vouch for this, all good quality hard sandstone, no cleaning required, no loose/brittle rock. Fred Nicole seems to keep going back; has put up a V15 there recently - see www.saclimb.co.za. For good bouldering pics check out my mates website; www.bouldering.co.za

In reply to post 333: I'm going to see if bouldering.co.za want to swap links when I get a minute to do any more work on the site! SA would be a great destination, but an expensive flight - is it cheap once you're there? Also, are you likely to get eaten by nasty beasties whilst merrily tramping through the undergrowth, and what is the situation like regarding personal safety - I freely admit to being entirely biased by media reports of violence and reports on flame-thrower equipped beemers!

In reply to post 336: Flight? I have booked for £550 to Jo'burg, but £600 to Cape Town is usual. It is dirt cheap when you get there - laughably so in fact. If you can get there for two weeks or more it is definitely worth it. There are a few beasties in the undergrowth, but its generally ok. I saw 3 snakes in the 15 years I was there, plus the occasional spider, but nothing serious. The Western Cape is nowhere near as bad Johannesburg, although there is a bit of street crime, just like anywhere really. If you have some cash to spare Mike, I am off off at the end of October.

In reply to post 350: I wish I did Chris, but after 7 months off work this year after the it contract market expired, I'm seriously skint. Managed to scrape a bit together for (hopefully) a couple of weeks in Sardinia this year, and a cheap week's snowboarding in Serre Chevalier next year. Even having to sell my mobike, sniff! Still, SA sounds like one for the future for definite. I've only ever heard good things about the natural beauty of the place, and I've always wanted to go to Africa.

In reply to post 350: No arguements from me - there's stacks of the stuff! especially around the cederburgs - we just pulled over to the side of this dirt road on the way to one of the main roped climbing areas (wolfburg) and had a few hours fun on some top problems that no-ones probably bothered with before (and the rock WAS as good as Chris says) P.S. two of those three snakes he saw in 15 years were in the 5 weeks whilst i was out there with him! (one of which was in the bloody camp site - fortunately someone dog found it and they whacked it over the head, removing the threat, the other was a bloody big one but we were hiding in a car so that was ok) Chris - you've obviously not told your story of strange red lumps from spider bites then??? SA is dirt cheap when you get there and a top place to visit - would recommend it to anyone

In reply to post 352: Sorry, not really on-topic but I'd foolishly posted this on the errors thread: Another question for Stuart:- are there any ex pat climbing clubs in HK? The reason I ask is on behalf of a friend who has started climbing at the YMCA but has noone to climb with. She lives in Laguna Verde and I reckon she could do with getting out to some of the places in HK.... She was hoping to get out with Luce and Ange until they had to cut short their visit.

In reply to post 354: No real clubs whatsoever in HK - its more a case of find a group of people and latch onto them (something i did about 3 years ago - although most have since left!) She shouldn't have too much trouble finding people to climb with at the Y but if she's still struggling tell her to e mail me at: stuart@hongkongclimbing.com and we'll see what we can do. Was hoping to show Luce and Ang a bit of climbing here too, useless buggers, running out of money and all that!
