recovering missing files
August 17, 2007, 04:12:09 pm
A file appears to have gone AWOL on my computer. Any ideas on how to get it back?

sorry run the evalution first to see if your file is there, tip unless its media un check the media settings or else it will take about 7 hours to scan your drive.

cheers, it's running now. But what if the file's not been deleted, but has been moved and renamed randomly? (it's happened before)

oh wait, I just remembered that program that predicts the random renaming of files.

Oh no wait it doesn't and will never exist

Use search, search whole computer then sort into file types and look at files of similar size of the same type

Shouldn't be too difficult Andi, search for file types and enter "donkey p..."
Or just download it again?

but the last time this happened, it renamed the file and the extension, in which case it's lost forever. And as it was a random file I didn't know the size of it in the first place. But none of that matters now because I downloaded and reinstalled it. Cheers anyway.

I'd suggest there is something rather screwed about your OS if its...

moved and renamed randomly?

...files.  At the very least you should probably run some in-depth virus scans, then review your current security setup, closing any unnecessary ports that are open.

No sane operating system would randomly move and rename files.

No, it didn't work so I had to uninstall, re-download and re-install it. Just glad I didn't lose all my settings...
