Warming up when there are no warm ups
July 13, 2007, 04:54:34 pm
Hi all.

A warming up question. We all read lots about warming up for routes by progressively moving up through routes of increasing difficulty.

I am hoping to do a Malham trip when the weahter improves, on a bit of an onsighting mission. My hardest onsight is F7a+. And I have only onsighted about 10 F7as. Accordingly 7a isnt much of a warm up for me! Apparently there's not really anything (with one or two exceptions) below 7a.

So, what do people do to warm up when everthing at a crag is 'hard' (relative to hardest onsight)?

Climb bolt to bolt, boulder about as best you can, waft your arms about, generally just try and improvise. If you're stuck for ideas for improvising I've found that the "scenes from a hat" and "helping hands" games from Whose Line is it Anway have gone down a storm on the Catwalk. Steve McClure has had hilarious reults doing "hoedown" with Richard Vranch on piano.

yep yep - sacrifice one of the 7a's to be not onsighted. go on it bolt to bolt (or even toprope it resting before you get too pumped)

I never have this problem.
  • I very rarely climb routes
  • I warm up in about 3 seconds
