Nikon D100 vs Dxx
April 30, 2007, 01:29:30 pm
I've got a little bit of spare cash coming along soon. It will be enough (going by Ebay prices) to get a D100 body in good condition, or some other more modern DSLR.

I'm keen on sticking with Nikon for various reasons (mostly as I have some lenses).

So - should I go for the D100, or have the likes of the D70s superceded it?

I would have thought the D70 effectively superceded the D100, despite being cheaper new and used. its a year or so newer which is a long time in terms of improvements in image processing etc. also the i-TTL flash system of the D70 (and subsequent cameras) is better, new generation. Wireless flash for free anyone? similarly the D200 supercedes the D70, thought it is heavier and more expensive, built a lot better.

The D80 is supposedly the D70 upgrade, other than that most of what Dave sez is true. I wouldn't bother with a D100, either get a D70 or save up for a D200. The D100 seems to have been a bit of an experiment, it doesn't have any of the features that have been developed along the D line since.

Other option to look into is a Fuji S2pro.

I've now compared the D100 and D70 side by side on DPreview. The only difference I can see is the self-timer intervals are better on the D100, which doesn't bother me. The D70s's bigger screen would appear to put it ahead of the D100 in overall terms.

Does anyone know how the D100 handles compared to the D70?

one thing to consider looking at the stats is the flash sync speed is only 1/180th on the D100, and 1/500th on the D70. so if you're looking at using fill flash in broad daylight the D100 is much worse. Handling wise you'd expect them to be very similar, althought i read somwhere that changing the WB on the fly is a lot easier/quicker on the D70 which is good. given the D100 is sitll more expensive (why?) I think the D70 is a no-brainer (as it was 2 years ago when i bought mine!).
