It has to be Grit for me, closely followed by Sandstone.

I love the friction, the features and the technical style of climbing which doesn't always just involve power (coz I ain't got none!).

1. Grit
2. Sandstone
3. Granite?

I've never climbed on granite but the stuff they have in bishop and yosemite must be fukking superb if it looks that good.

Grit only gets the nose in front of sandstone by vurtue of the fact that grit doens't have those little shitty gratton fingernail edges you get in font.

Depends, depends... Sandstone must win, as it technically includes grit as well as the fine material at Font, SE USA and Rocklands. But then you have that shite down south... Granite can form some truly awesome boulders (i.e. most of Little Cottonwood (excluding the Gate Buttress area) and Squamish), it can be o.k. (Yosemite) or it can be total crap (Joshua Tree). Must be between the two though, depending on your mood...

1. Sandstone
2. Grit
3. Granite
1001. Schist

What's up with the bouldering in Joshua Tree?  I was thinking of going there inspired by tales of new problems to do right next to tracks.  Admitedly it sounds too good to be true.

Heard a lot of folk say JT is pants.

Peak imestone comes into its own in summer for a number of reasons:
  • Its slightly less impossible to climb on when hot than grit.
  • It requires, and thus trains, strong fingers
  • Relativley difficult to split a tip
  • It mostly stays dry in the rain
  • Theres no midges
  • Its more like indoor woody bouldering, so those with no technique can get by on power alone
however it is generally pollished, all hard, not as easthetically pleasing and some of the holds can fucking hurt.

After climbing at Fairy Steps last weekend, which is quality limestone (not the shattered Peak stuff, more like the best bits of Malham or even some French stuff) and has very little polish, my faith in limestone has been restored to a certain extent.

weathered limestone, not quarried or polished shite has got to be the best. good friction, nice featuresand quality moves. bit dangerous for routes tho  :ev: . having said that you  have got to love stoney and raven tor for the power.
grit has got to be a close second.
