Camcorders
April 23, 2007, 02:40:17 pm
Am thinking of getting a camcorder and torn between the hard drives ones and the mini dv's.

Anyone got anything against the new hard drive ones? How much recording am i likely to get out of a 30gb? I assume thee are just as easy to get the footage onto your pc and edit?

Anyway, any pros and cons would be great.

Adam, I am slightly biased as I use Mini DV.  The quality is pretty good (check out the Brownstones Wiki vids on the link below- not bad even through YouTube compression) and I like having the tapes as a back up in case I get the computer stolen/ lost etc.  DV is easy to download, you just need FireWire.  I store them as avi which is about 120MB per minute of footage.
Hard Disc potential issues-  no back-up once downloaded and recorded over.  Possible problems with streaming but shouldn't be a problem nowadays.

Bottom line?  You get what you pay for.  I think the lenses/ capture system is probably more important than the storage method.  But until technology moves on a bit more (and prices come down) I'd stick with Mini-DV   I'm sure others will disagree.

Mini Dv tape all the way.

if you use macs then it's really the only way to import segmentally and edit with the imovie suite - which is sooo bloody easy to use. the HD ones export in mpeg4.... that is not always as easy to edit on any computer, but i've only used a few applications and i'm there sure that there are those out there that will disagree.

With DV the technology is older, so  you get uber more for yr buck (lenses etc...) and the quality is fine at entry level... IMO.

I'm probably going to buy the Canon HV20 as soon as I sell some other stuff but I can't find a bargain price on a PAL version. I've found some very decent prices but all jap NTSC imports. Kind of keen to get a warranty just in case... Anyone find me a deal?

Here's my two pence worth.

I ended up going for a Sony DCR-HC36, and its brilliant. Its mini DV but comes with touch screen, loadsa features and I got a 1gb memory stick for it as well. Paid around 250 quid ish for it. One of the best features was a new hi-tech, revoultionary remotre control. According to the box, it has a remote COMMANDER  :-\

Overall, really easy to use and the quality is excellent.

Nice.
I'd have it on my gravestone but unfortunately I'll be getting cremated and having my ashes scattered somewhere... er... I dunno.... in font?

You can still have a gravestone if you've been cremated Jim. Personally I think you should go for a plaque on festin de pierres.
