Comeback!
June 24, 2003, 07:41:57 pm
Hi

Ive just spent the last year and a half off due to injuries/surgery etc... Ive been told I'll finally allowed to go back in about 3 months...

At the moment Im hideously week after being unable to do much with my arms for a while, and am pretty unfit, as havent really been allowed to run/swim etc for a while either!

Has anyone got any advice for stuff to do in the next 3 months which is going to make life any easier? or even after that...

Cheers

Daniel

What did you do to yourself? Sounds nasty.

Don't know if anyone on here has had to  recover from such a long term injury. Has your physio/surgeon given you any advice?

There might be some sports injury forums online where you could find good information - or perhaps it's even worth going to see a sports injury specialist so they can advise you of how to go about getting back into shape.

I symapathise with your situation having had a number of extended layoffs myself. I found just going to the crag and mincing around taking photos and smoking fags a pretty good way of filling my time. When I started climbing again I realised that this was pretty much all I did anyway. I would'nt worry about losing strength and all that cos when you start climbing again you will be so psyched you will soon get back to your pre lay off level off strength and beyond.

Word Jim, you certainly did some fierce loitering and smoking mate. If your mates are going to the crag, go too, just to stay focussed.

I bust the ligaments/capsule in the shoulder(s)... Basically just stretched them. I think it was a problem before hand, but excessive use and too much training was the final nail in the coffin...

Incredibly psyched to get out there again tho. Physio and surgeon have just said I can start going out again in 3 months... I was just wondering if anyone else had similar experiences?

Cheers

same/similar shit happened to Jimbo- kept dislocating his shoulder, but take heart, he's been climbing about a year since the op and he's tearing it down, although he has to be careful with certain moves.

Despite having a fucked shoulder Jim still burns off the likes of me and scouse easily in gnary powerfull moves. He must be cut from a different cloth.

I belive its slapping with left arm that has to be avoided in case his arm falls off.

Bust you shoulder capsule?!  Christ that's gotta be painful!  What were you doing?  Chin-ups with the bar behind your head?

Here this ya'll, I see people doing chin-ups with the bar behind their head all the time.  They always say 'this is harder so it must make me stronger'.  I say, 'hell no mutha, that's putting loads of pressure on your shoulder capsule, stop that sh*t now'.  It's the biggest cause of shoulder injuries in gyms you know!

I'd suggest the best way of getting better is by doing bungee supported chin-ups, and gradually reducing the amount of assistance until you can pull-up and feel no pain etc. in your shoulder.  You want to be building up the strength of the undamaged ligaments and the tendons to increase the support in your shoulder girdle.

As long as you're careful, you should be able to have a long and happy climbing career! :D

Not bust as in ripped or anything, that would be well painful! Just totally stretched an already loose capsule... Had it (both) shrunk back now, so hopefully climbing again by october.

Stop it guys I wont be able to fit my head out the house. I would give up all my stength for only half of the skill, technique and rockcraft which the likes of both daves are fortunate enough to be blessed with.

Sacasm or not-a compliment is a compliment- and I don't get that many so I'm having it.
