GPH, in the first shot got married, qualified as a teacher and moved to Manchester. A far cry from his days as lodger at Dave Thomas' house who he always owed money to and once had an embarrassing and hilarious playground style scuffle with in the Foundry car park.

More GPH trivia. [Warning: Joe look away now, this doesn't concern you.] He once smashed up my neighbours bird table at a party after his coat had got burned. At the same party someone (you I think Jasper) got stuck in a room with Glen and some other guy playing I'll show you mine if you show me yours. Knives that is, although as Glen was involved I am sure he thought it would lead to other things.

GPH also came to Buoux one Easter and predictably ran out of cash. He ended up having to help lay a drive for some French farmer (with Gaz Parry IIRC) and nearly died as it was super hot and the bloke didn't give them enough water.

I was at that party too, Graham. In fact, i remember standing near the window, chatting, and smelled burning. I looked down to see smoke coming from a coat. I simply picked up the coat and pushed it out the window into the back garden and carried on talking, while the coat smouldered away in the garden. When i heard later Paul went mad, I wondered should i not have put the fire out

So anyway, here's some lycra-clad nostalgia from down this way courtesy of a trio of poms:

A rather youthful Chris Plant on Imagination Direct (26) at Arapiles in early 1985.

Dr Paul Smith powering up Yesterday Direct (27/8), also at Arapiles, probably in late '85 or early '86.

Steve Monks colourfully soloing a local route near here (Exam Technique, 22, You-Yangs.)

On a slightly historical note, here is one of the very first shots taken of what would become Serpentine on Taipan Wall. This is of Malcolm Matheson on his very first foray onto the route after bolting it (this will be in spring or early summer, 1987.)

There was a photo of plant Pot on the cover of OTE, looks like the same route. He looked very fit. I also remember in the pic strange wear on the outside of his boots, as if he swopped feet or something?

Well spotted. I took quite a few shots of Chris that day and ended up giving him one or two to take home and he ended up submitting one of them to OTE who promptly stuck it on the front cover! I only knew about it when I saw the mag in a climbing shop somewhere and the issue in question (OTE 23 IIRC) still has pride of place in my collection!

Cheers Chris, I seemed to have a knack of being around the right people at the right time for a while back in the 80s. I never actually approached OTE about that cover shot and there was no way they could have known I happened to have moved to the UK just a couple of months before they published it! To be honest, I was so chuffed at the time to have a cover shot I wasn't in the least bothered about the money, it was nice to know people thought my stuff was good enough to print.

Dammit. I've got some old video footage of the first ever Foundry lead comp and it should have Gav on it (possibly employing a toe hook or two). Unfortunately Ian Harrison's Dad (who was filming) missed Gav's attempt so all there is is a shot of a swinging quickdraw with the voiceover "That's where Gavin got to". Actually I'll have to sort out converting it from video as there's some Old Skool gold on that tape.

General rule is you only need toe hooks once it gets steep. The steep bits of lead walls tend to be high up.

With these 2 facts in mind how on earth would you expect footage of Gav toe hooking at a BICC?

The route started over the little overhang at the LH side of the Foundry lead wall. If Gav can get a toehook in at The School then I'm sure he could have managed it there. I didn't mention which quickdraw it was that was swinging anyway Graeme........

Another GPH fact. I'm not sure but didn't he come pretty much last out of about 100 people in that comp? IIRC he slipped off on said little roof and barked his shin quite badly on the arete (about five feet up). Hilarious.
