most feel you need to use it for ages to see any (if any, depending onif you believe in it) difference...

which would be explained by the very slow growth of cartilige & poor blood supply in general of all joints.

i know of no randomised controlled medical trials.

for what it's worth i take glucosamine (it's powdered shellfish extraxt btw..) and i think it helps with joints aches... but it's just part of the package: stretching - ensuring your back is supported at work, cross training - especially useful for upper backs etc...

hope this helps

I started to develop badly aching finger joints after a hard training session, and it seemed to be getting worse. After a month of G.S. the aches had totally disappeared. I take it most days now and havent had a recurrance of the problem in about 3 years.

you can buy a years supply for about £15 I think from:

I had a dodgy thumb joint which had been painful at a low level for well over a year. It has completely cleared since I started taking Glucosamine twice a day, it took a few weeks to take effect as suggested above. I get a cheap supply of good quality tablets off a friend who's an osteo.

Surely you mean Glucosamine Sulphate / Chondroitin?

I've been taking it sporadically for the last year, and had no niggles since I started, especially from elbows but also fingers and shoulders since I started taking it. Although I have been doing some yoga, stretching and lost some weight, any of which could have contributed.

Takes a while for it to get into your system and take effect.

I have been using the Natures Aid variety of Glucosamine, Chrondoitin and MSM for about 4-5 months now and it seems to help as I hardly ache after a good session bar my already injured finger.

I think it helps slowly strengthen over time but doesn't do much for existing injuries? Possibly aimed more at preventing injury than fixing current ones, or just a placebo effect in action  :-\

Isn't MSM a natural painkiller? Maybe you are getting just as thrashed as before, but not feeling it?

i love this stuff. my wrist ached, i started taking glucosamine, vit c and omega 3's regularly again and my tweaky wrist doesn't hurt much at all any more, and i caried on climbing on it. was talking to a rheumatologist the other day and he said ( ihave no proof of this) that glucosamine has been proved as effective as nsaids in osteoarthritis. but a tweaky wrist isn't degenerative, so again i say its not proof. also a herbal remedy company isn't gonna fund a clinical trial so they're unlikeyly to be forthcoming.

Sorry for pulling up an old topic but i could do with some knowledge on this stuff. I have started taking it this for my knee. I got a bottle of tablets in superdrug the other day and they were buy one get on free.
the label says
393 mg glucosamine provided by-
500 mg of glucosamine sulphate
400 mg of chondroitin

The bottle says 'one a day' but i remember speaking to a climber a while ago who said that you need to take 1200 mg a day for it to have effect. Those of you who take them- how much are you taking?

True. The body can't absorb more than 1500mg a day. More than this and you have expensive urine.
