A quick tip for the gropro folks.  Most people(boulderers especially, but sporties for stick clips too) these have extendable painter pole stick brushes.  If instead of taping your brush to it and cut off a paint roller near the handle and you have a n easily removeable brush.  This allows you to  screw on tripod mount(like this: http://www.amazon.com/ProPole-Painters-Adapter-Camera-Monopod/dp/B00EVWS1JK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449512542&sr=8-1&keywords=painters+pole+camera+mount.  This turns your stick into a monopod. 

The monopod is easy to set up just about anywhere.  and with a gorpo it is light enough to do alot of different options as the leverage is easy to work with.  Stick it in the ground, lean it against something etc.  It's also easy to set up on top for other angles due to the length of the pole.

I just use an actual tripod. Started out with just a small gorilla pod but recently upgraded.

I did that for a while, but its too much extra weight.  Might seem a bit odd, but the approaches I do now are generally in the 20-60 minute range and I'm always carrying 2-3 pads, cleaning kit, along with all my other shit.  I was doing the tripod/dslr thing, but its too damn much weight.  So I picked up a gopro, and the stick attachment, so now the camera is small and minimal weight, but still high quality, and good setup. 

If I had shorter approaches, I might go back to the tripod.  I have a home built crane and slider too, but they're just too much to carry. 

Quite literally I had to have the backpack straps on my main pad reinforced...

Ah yeah that makes alot of sense. My tripod fits into my big pad (along with start pad) and I usually carry another.


Also, my approaches are usually not more than 10 minutes... Haha...

Tripod needn't weigh much. Either cough up for a carbon fibre one, or just about any small pisscheap aluminium one with a crapy builtin plastic head will do the job and weigh fuckall.

What Dave said. After getting frustrated with limitations on angles using my old Gorillapod I just went for a cheapo £20 job from Argos, did the job fine and (I hope) significantly improved the stuff I was able to capture.


That said, it's knacked (one of the little rivets that holds the mechanism in place sheared off) but I think that may be my fault chucking my pad around with it inside!

Two problems with this in the UK- most climbers here don't use a painter's pole (99% of sport climbers have one of these, boulderers generaly have a more Heath Robinson brush-on-a-stick setup) and those thread adapters are impossible to source domestically. Wad point waiting for anyone who can prove me wrong about the adapter.

A better solution would be to epoxy a 1/4" BSW threaded nut (standard camera tripod thread) onto the bottom of any brush, then instead of a brushstick you buy a cheap monopod, screw camera on for video, screw the brush on for brushing duties, bingo.

I've wrapped the gorilla pod legs in a downward spiral around the top of the brush on a stick (so the threaded part is on top) in the past and rammed the stick into the ground. This only worked well for filming the bitch, since all other things I've done have had firmer ground conditions. I Really need to get a lightweight tripod.

An ultrapod would be great for this. I've used it closed up and the velcro strap taking photos with an SLR and it's rock solid.

Yeah I've got one of these. Rarely use it but when I have it's been great for velcroing to a brush stick for an impromptu monopod. By virtue of the rigid legs and the positive closure of the strap they feel pretty solid. Never been tempted by the gorillapods.

I think it's a better system. The legs on the gorillapod never seem to clamp down that well (especially on mine, where the end of one leg fell off and floated down the Spey).

On another note, here is a video a friend of mine put together about climbing walls etc around Bristol. I'm in it a fair bit and we scoped out a lot of the spots together, its been really good fun to do. There are also some great problems (lots  climb a lot better than they look). It's been filmed on and off over the last two summers.

I think the first time I ever climbed was at Markfield too, it was nice to go back. To the right of the main slab is this steep little wall. The L>R diagonal is 7B/+ and the sitter to Little Lilly is 8A, details are on UKC I think.
