I really like that Matlock section of the Froggat guidebook, some random-looking places I'd not heard of before - nice work Grimer et al. Seemed like a good time to head to some fairly easy esoteric stuff given the relentless heat. The Arete at Jackson Tor is the best of the bunch but all are on decent rock and are well worthwhile. Overall a good day out climbing on grit when the temps are up at 29 degrees!

The thing about places like Matlock Quarry is to control expectations. I think it's a great place, and enjoyed some routes there too, but I told Pete Whittaker about the unclimbed arete there (you wanna see that baby) and I got the imopression he thought it was dark hole. I think winter might be the best time for there.

Incidentally, the whole thrust behind the Matlock Bank stuff, both a massive tidy up and the script for the book, came from a guy called Andy Lewandowski, a local. He did a great job there.

Aye it was quite a long drawn out saga with the frequent rainstorms every 5 mins and covering the holds in towels and hoodies to try keep it climbable. Beautiful problem though!

I found the old footage of the problem I reclimbed the last weekend, Il Manfano.
Tom was with me and that's a really good memory, pain, yelling and cursing apart. I think a proper sitter could be done, but the rock behind will be a sure dab, and I don't fancy shredding my skin again, so I think it's over, but who knows.

I thought the Jennings diet had been revamped to create a svelte machine capable of not whiteying on the last move of Misericorde but I could be wrong? Si has been quitting the smokes and replaced them with a surplus of food... As far as I am aware, it is not affecting his fishing, as his centre of gravity has no doubt been improved and in turn his ability to haul in some big fishes out of the Mersey!
