Almscliff - this weekend
November 02, 2006, 03:45:34 pm
I would very much like to visit almscliff this weekend and wondered if any locals will be there since I have never been there and would appreciate a tour. I have had a look at the page on yorkshire grit but have no guidebook to work from. If anyone will be there saturday/sunday let me know.

Thanks.

Caley on Saturday for me because it should be in really good condition, and being Caley I might not get a chance to climb there in good conditions for the rest of the season.  But hopefully I'll get there a lot this grit season.

If it's damp then we'll probably head up to the Cliff, though.  There's always plenty of people with guides knocking about you'll be able to have a peep at if no-one meets up with you from here.

I may well be over that way on Sunday if the weather holds. Not been for ages so I need a trip to the Wart.

Was at Caley today, was mainly mint. Will probably be up at the cliff for at least some of the day on saturday, think some sheff types are coming up too.

Give us a PM if you want a tour.

Can someone post direction on how to get to alsmcliff, or better yet, a highly detailed map with the location of the crag and parking marked clearly. I've tried searching for almcliffe because I thought there was a village by the same name but have come up with nothing.

Many Thanks

depends where you're coming from, but i always go up the A61 towards Harrogate, then just after the thight bend right and narrow bridge there's a left turning into Dunkeswick, signposted Dunkeswick and Weeton. Go down this, through Duneswick, keep on the road, then into Weeton, turn right signposted Huby and North Rigton in Weeton, under the railway bridge, straight over across the main road, up the hill, turn left at the T junction, the follow that road up the hill and under Almscliff. You can't really miss it then.

I know you've got your heart set Uncle, but don't you think Almscliff is rather a waste of the sort of weather this weekend? Places like Caley and Earl should be in good nick and unusually dry. Good conditions + dry conditions days at caley are proper rocking horse shit. Whereas Almscliff will probably be a bit to warm and is the place you will end up everytime you go to yorkshire and the weather craps out (if you go up to yorkshire grit a few times this WILL happen). I'd say Caley has about 1 good conditions day for every 15/20 at Almscliff. It's your decision....

don't go to almscliff, its shit.
Go to caley, its the no.1 grit bouldering venue in the UK
or go to earl, no.2 in my ranking

If you come past our house (unlikely), you could borrow my yorkshire bouldering guide. Its unlikely I'll be using it in the next couple of weeks

Caley was wet and I ended up at Almscliff  ???

We did the same thing, disappointing because the forecast was so good and it had been so good wed-fri.  Quite cold at the cliff and it actually rained a little a few times.  Managed Si's arete which was on my ticklist, so I was happy and then  I got to watch some of the more talented climbers warmup on it .  Lots of strong climbers out at the cliff yesterday.  Conditions at Earl today were a lot better than Caley yesterday.  Not too cold out of the wind, but everything was dry.

Almscliff isn't shit by any stretch of the imagination.  Imagine the conversation if Almscliff had not been found and you discovered it:

"Hey Bob, I've found a new crag"
"Oh have you, is it any good?"
"no it's shit, next to the road, lots of parking, dries quickly, hundreds of problems of all different grades and styles"
"Yeah you're right sounds shit"   ::)

Problem with Almscliff is you end up there a lot when you hadn't planned it.  Like yesterday.

Twas pretty mint at Caley today, it seemed that half of sheffield was there, never seen so many cars on the road.

Thanks for the info people. I finally lost my Yorkshire virginity! I made it up on sunday in a mere 1h15min from Derby to Almscliff! It takes me that to get to stanage! Oh the joy of motorways. Anyway, it was windy to fuck which made climbing rather difficult (it was so windy that I actually fell over at one point). Looks a cool place though and I'd be keen to go back. Went on to Caley only to find hundreds of people there! Luckily bumped into James Ibbertson and he showed me around. It is a very cool place and I remembered how nice it was to go to a new area where you haven't done/tried everything! Thanks to the other locals who were as nice as can be. I'll be back up soon I hope for more action.

Stubbs, am I right in thinking that your avatar is indeed Almscliffe? Had a great day out last time at Almscliffe and we even made a film. Ah those long summer days.....

You are right, of course, the place where I have probably spent more than 50% of my entire time climbing, a place I never seem to get bored of.

Is your movie online?

Sadly wasn't a climbing movie. It was a West Yorks outdoor Icelandic Saga-style gay flick. Should be out soon when we find a distributor. Is Johnny Dawes running a gay film company or is that just a rumour?

Seriously though, it was a wack spoof flick. I was trying to be a groundbreaking director by making the first feature length mobile-phone filmed film, but it just didn't work as I had intended.

She is indeed a cruel but fair mistress. Never intend going to Almscliff as you will always default to going there half of the time.

Should be up there at some point, unless the weather is very bad.

I'll be the white man, average height-ish, dark hair, with bouldering mat and chalk bag.  Easy to spot.  Unless I have my hat on, then I'll be all the above apart but you won't be able to see my dark hair, but I will have a beanie on.

I'll be coming from Otley, so I won't be going via Leeds sorry.

any chance of any yorkshire grit except Almscliff (or Slipstones) being dry on saturday?  Has it been raining on Caley / Earl / Ilkley etc today?  I think the overnight and saturday daytime forecast is meant to be fairly clear... is there any hope... not sure if I can cope with the winds and crowds at the 'cliff (and Sunderland Wall is hosting a compy so not even that avenue of escape).

Ilkley Calf will be dry, not too sure about the edge, but even though it might not be crowded with climbers, it will probably still be crowded, non?

Earl will be pretty bad conditions I reckon, as it will have rained there today, and it's damp and cold at night so won't dry.

I would imagine Caley will also be in bad conditions, if not I'll be there too.  A couple of weeks ago after 3 days of great sunny dry days, one night of dampness and mist managed to make the whole place pretty poor on the Saturday when we were there.

I never find Almscliff that bad because you can generally find good problems that are on their own with no-one on them.  Obviously not so good if you have the certain popular problems in mind.

Cheers for the reminder - I desperately need a change... suffering from a complete lack of mojo at the moment (got the winter blues and haven't ticked owt for ages).  Even a new wall to be rained-off at might help.  Ah well, fortune favours the brave (and prodigal of petrol money) - even a curtailed Caley / Ilkley (really want to bag First Arete) / Almscliff trip could reap dividends.  Although tempted by a trip to Shaftoe with the promise of a retreat to watch Casino Royale if the weather craps out or the icy winds and near-zero temps all get too much.

No, I just have a friend that lives there.  Been there quite a few times though.  I'm from East Lancs.  The butchers in the center of Otley (can't remember the name) is very good.  We went on Saturday to buy some sausages and burgers for the barbeque.

Making the trip from Shef to Yorkshire this Saturday as I need to pick something up from Leeds.  I was gonna go to the Cliff or Caley (if the wind is up).  Anyone got any advice as to which will be best and is anyone gonna be around?  I'd love to go to Earl as well but I'm not sure how much further it is?  Anyone?
