Enjoyed two very different music based films, Whiplash and Sing Street, both now on Netflix.

Also caught the animated Kubo and the two strings after a Kermode recommendation. Great film, a joy to watch.

Car chases bores me to no end. They never create any tension. Case in point: have you ever read a car-chase in a book? No, of course not: that would be stupid. As stupid as showing one on film in fact.

Come on. The Bourne Identity. Gone In 60 Seconds. Bad Boys!

Ya'll just naming ones you can think of. Are any the case where you think, that is memorable and made the film better?

The film itself has to watchable in the first place. So not gone in 60 seconds with is awful.

The Bourne ones are good, particularly the chase with the black G Wagon.

Mad Max (the original first one).

And how could you forget Smokey and the Bandit 1,2 and 3 ;)

The car chase-y bit of Casino Royale was pretty good, and I thought that was the best of the series from the modern (i.e. post Moore) Bond era.

The Italian Job. The film is basically a car chase.

Possibly stretching the definition of car chase, but the recent Mad Max was awesome.

As a kid I had a soft spot for the white car in The Spy Who Loved Me.

I also love the Revenant though, so maybe our tastes are different :)

Another vote for Ronin! Classic!

Oh, and it pains me to say this, but I watched Bridget Jones' Baby last night.

And I enjoyed it! :sorry:  :guilty:

Galpinos - I didn't know all that stuff about Affleck.  He certainly seems to be carrying some demons...

yet again I find myself unable to finish watching something because the violence and (more importantly) cruelty are too much for me - even though I can see it is a good film - this time it was Django Unchained

is this an age thing? (me, not the film)

I'm not sure I could watch Reservoir Dogs again, thinking about it

is this something that others have experienced?

I guess it has something to do with the refinement of cinematic techniques, but maybe also increased empathy with age

I watched that "Captain America, Civil war", the other day. It was just a light hearted, pass a wet afternoon impulse watch, but the plot line struck a chord. I'd found action movies much less appealing recently, but (in an otherwise typical Marvel jaunt) the characters' angst at the collateral damage of their "heroics" seemed strangely poignant. Quite nice to see acknowledgement by the writers that violence has consequence.

All posts either sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek or mildly mocking-in-a-friendly-way unless otherwise stated. I always forget to put those smiley things...

Hunt for the Wilderpeople now on Netflix, which is good because I missed this at the cinema last year. Great light-hearted comedy from New Zealand.
If 'What We Do In She Shadows' from the same writer is still on there it's also well worth a watch (probably better IMO)

Got taken to see La La Land the other day and it was woeful. Barely anything to commend it. A thoroughly average film.

Saw Trainspotting 2 the other night. It was surprisingly good, mainly because it felt like it avoided the sequel trap of trying to copy the first film. Plenty of references to the first film but it felt like the characters  had changed enough that the film could cover some new ground.

Saw this a few days ago myself. Haven't read the books so not sure how it compares plot wise, but I really enjoyed it. Don't think it tried to do too much and was fairly independent from the first film. Would definitely recommend. Preferred the soundtrack from the first though - can't beat it!

MrsTT was dutifully unimpressed - and (a) she likes musicals and (b) is a film buff.

Recon I dodged a bullet by passing on the opportunity...

Really! Gutted. After Whiplash I was very excited but a bit concerned by the lavish praise it had received. Reckon I'll still see it......

OK, any film that has Romain Thievin doing the car stunt (Bourne identity, Ronin, Taxi etc) will at least have competent driving, which make the car chases slightly less boring.

Looks good, I hadn't seen it since it came out. a few points arise:

Great choice of car the 6.3 in Brown.
As i remember thinking at the time there is no way that cooking spec 406 would keep up with an M5. McElhone must be a shit driver.

My dad had a 4.2 S8 on test for a week when they came out. I thought it was amazing. He took it back after three days because he said he would lose his licence if he kept it and just got another diesel E class. Gutted. His colleague got one instead. About a year later for some reason my dad ended up borrowing the S8 anyway for a couple of weeks. Early on a sunday morning on the M180 my mum was pulled over doing 115 in it. She played dumb, said it was an office car that she'd never driven before, had no idea how fast she was going though she admitted to being in a hurry because she was late for a yoga teachers seminar. (True). The two young shavers completely let her off!

I had a 2l 405 as a hire car to abuse one weekend. They are / were superb handling cars... DeNiro's 'trying to drive fast' acting face cracks me up in that chase...

I also nearly bought an S8 about 12 years ago... was offered to me for very little - 4.2 Quattro, All the bells and whistles.. (did they have an aluminium shell?) I ended up with an AX GT instead....
