The Bicycle Thieves currently on BBC iplayer

A lovely, sad, tale beautifully told (no zombies, explosions or 3D).

+1 lovely film

The Big Short

Funny and engaging

Highly entertaining story of those who 'shorted' the housing market in the lead up to the global economic crash. I enjoyed the characters though Brad Pitt's seemed rather satellite. Very complicated stuff but had strange 'explainers' sequences throughout which were quite funny. Not sure of the fact checking but as a movie I've watched it again already. Recommended (currently on Netflix)

Excuse my stupidity, but what does that mean?

I'm guessing but satellites are "out there" [orbiting the earth], implying the character wasn't very realistic.

Or else, the Pitt's character is removed from the film in some way, i.e. just orbiting around it without having much to do with it. Perhaps: "WTF is that character doing in this story?".

+1 on that interpretation. Not seen film to confirm though.

Similes often obfuscate the meaning that is trying to be conveyed and are pretty pointless I think.

I think he was referring to his big ears.

Good film regardless.

I saw the first half of the 'Everest' film - which seemed pretty decent. Of course its the second half where the shit hits the fan and the story gets controversial (Kraukner vs Boukreev etc..) - anyway....

It was a metaphor, not a simile.

If you think adding new layers of meaning is a pointless activity, then yes, figurative language is pointless.

Is that like saying something like something? So a metaphor for a metaphor is something like something like?

Anyway, back on topic.

Hell Or Highwater.

Texan bank robbers. Men in cowboy hats. Jeff Bridges. Open vistas. Guns, morals and money.

Fantastic, beautifully shot, well cast. Loving nods to old westerns.

Is that on Netflix/in the cinema or something? Sounds amazing.

Cinema. Saw it a couple of weeks ago but I'm pretty sure it's still on.

Apologies.

It still obfuscated the meaning to the extent that Duncan, myself and others had to guess what was being meant.  We've clear, precise and expressive languages to communicate with so I see no need nor benefit in masking meaning behind figurative language and much prefer literal, especially in this medium of forums.

Non-technical literature is a different matter.

My guess is autocorrect gone wrong

You reckon "satellite" is auto corrected "shite"?

Miles Ahead.  I'm a fan so really enjoyed this.  Don Cheadle's Davis is uncanny. A doppelgänger.

Just got back from watching Kubo and the two strings. Stunning animation, haunting emotional story, the best 'kids' film I've seen in a very long time.

I, Daniel Blake.

Brilliant film. It's something everyone should watch.
