Glad to hear good reviews of Skyfall, off to watch in the week.

I thought it was good, but not as good as the hype. Best Bond film so far?  Probably.  But many parts were predictable, the action was slow in places and it didn't flow that well IMHO. Still worth seeing though.

I actually thought this Bond wasn't as enjoyable as the others in the Craig era. I particularly enjoyed Casino Royale and the fresh look at Bond. They've really exploited the whole "Bond on the back foot" thing in the past three films which has been great but is kind of unsustainable I think. Not sure where they're going to take the franchise to next.

Thinking about the film properly there was only one thing I thought was wrong with it. The plot - without which it becomes impossible to make a great film. I'll say no more as I don't want to spoil the film for those who want to see it.

Other than that, the Heineken and VW product placements were a little too cringeworthy.

Watched Skyfall last night, thought it was excellent; I have to disagree with Will I thought the plot was great, a departure from the standard Bond plot and all the more enjoyable for it.

It sounds like they'll be continuing this particular Bond arc in the next film, it'll be great to see where they take it.

I was expecting horrific product placement: so the car bit was quite obvious but I had no idea what beer I was meant to be drinking!  I don't even remember Bond checking what time it was in this film...

Have to say I was pretty disappointed with Skyfall. For me it just didn't feel like a bond film, I am not sure why, it just didn't.

If I had gone to see a generic action film I think I would of loved it.

Isn't that what Bond movies have been for some time now (perhaps since Brosnan took the lead)?

A Lonely Place To Die - A climbing thriller / comedy (I don think it's meant to be though); set in a strange netherworld of Scotland that is Glen Coe and then Glen Etive with views of the Cullin but An Teallach gets mentioned, and Dingwall (I think) is in the same place but has a fireball festival (which actually takes place in Stonehaven).

Pish acting, poor plot, some nice scenery.

In summary, don't bother.

I also watched something from about 5 years ago - the Rise of the Footsoldier.  Repellent, monstrous shit of the highest order. Its only redeeming feature is amusement relating to a hideous wig sported by one of the main characters. Not sure if the costume department intended that to be the case, but even so, it's still pretty funny. But totally shit otherwise.

I watched A Lonely Place to Die recently by the same director, Julian Gibley. Fantastic shots of the Scottish highlands and a half decent thriller. It's a little like a low rent deliverence with a touch of the Wickerman at the end but though that description sounds pretty bad, I enjoyed it. Decent acting with Sean Harris a very convincing bady and the climbing scenes in it are pretty good for a movie too.

It did give the wife nightmares though.....

Skyfall - Really good. Saw it at the IMAX last night. Thoughts:

NSFW  :
Daniel Craig – He’s brilliant. Tough, rugged, looks like he can handle himself and a twinkle in the eye that gets the ladies hearts racing.

Javier Bardem – Imagine David Walliams’ blonde twin brother was a secret agent gone bad. Everything a Bond baddy should be: scary, mental, physical deformity, quite unbelievable. He managed this whilst still being menacing. If I was trapped in a room with him, I wouldn’t fancy my chances, unlike with “Elliot Carver” etc….

Gadgets – They’ve still managed to avoid the ridiculous gadgets which I think is the way forward.

Product Placement – Not really a problem? Bar the “VW Beetles” line, which even appeared to make the actress wince whilst saying it, I didn’t really notice anything, maybe the phone but that’s only in retrospect.

Overall – Good action, decent plot and they’ve managed to install the “cast” for the next one. Bonzer!

The Cabin In The Woods - not quite worth the mega-rating it gets on Rotten Tomatoes, but a good fun sort of sci-fi thriller with escalating excitement and plenty of LOL moments. The main thing worth knowing is that despite the ominious poster, the catch/hook of this initially-horror-orientated film is nothing weird, freaky, or downright surreal - it's a straight up different rationale for the horror scenario that pans out to be a jolly good romp (albeit with an abrupt ending and an underdeveloped backstory which is a pity as the premise has lots of potential), rather than a horror headfuck. Favourite moments: the entrance of Marty (proper lol if you've seen Dollhouse), and the lift doors moment.

Watched this last night. Pretty much agree with your summary Fiend except the "jolly good" bit. Really disappointing as it is a very promising idea let down by being totally shit but not actually shit enough to be amusing. Made me angry as it was so close to being good if it had only been done right.

Saw Rust and Bone last night.  :o  http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt2053425/

It is absolutely bloody amazing. It is that really, really rare thing, a profoundly emotional yet unsentimental movie. It doesn't need any more wittering from me, just go and see it.
I should add that it is not exactly a bubbly, easy to watch, popcorn munching movie, a good counterpoint to skyfall though! Much 'better' as a movie (by which i suppose i mean arty-worthy) but less fun than Bond i suppose.

Given the lack of reaction when I mentioned it earlier, I assume the UKB massive wasn't too excited by Beasts of the Southern Wild. Anyway, saw it last week - great. The girl who plays Hushpuppy is amazing. Brilliant portrait of her relationship with her father. As someone with a small female child I cried a lot.

Actually, I thought it looked amazing. Thanks for posting the trailer, I've been looking forward to seeing it since you did. Glad that it lives up the promise - definitely be checking it out soon.

And you slate me for getting a film name slightly out?

It's like 10 year old who thinks they know how to write in English but get it wrong.

I take it you are referring to beasts...? In which case i thought that it looked well worth a watch from the trailer. The second clip in the boat is uncannily 'apocalypse now'

Has anyone seen Argo? Awesome, absolutely riveting. The way they managed to pull off creating an incredibly tense film with a good dollop of humour is excellently donei thought. Would be interested to hear other opinions.

Not a new film but I saw 'Dead Man Shoes' last week on Film 4. Can't believe I missed it from 2004. Paddy Considine from Red Riding etc, fucking excellent low budget Brit flick.

If you liked Dead Mens Shoes, I would recommend having a look through the Warp Films catalogue.

In other Shane Meadows related news we watched Once Upon A Time in The Midlands last night his Comedy/Romance/Western from 2002 set in Nottingham:

http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0301684/

While not up to the standard of some of his other films (DMS in particular) it was still pretty good and had enough amusing moments to keep us interested. It has a great cast but you get the feeling it might have been a better film without so many "star names". The kid who plays Shirley Henderson's daughter is superb and watch out for the Reeves and Mortimer cameo.

Nice one. I was about to swap from Netflix to LoveFilm so the timing couldn't be better.

Word. We got the same deal last year, so will need to wait 'til we move house, and this account will be in Kyle's name!
