shirley a comparison with the 20D would be more appropriate as thats the model it upgrades upon?

Not used the 30D but have been pretty happy with the performance of my 20D - especially since I'm now the proud owner of the Canon 24-70 F2.8 lense...

all three will be a big step back from the 1v - nasty little viewfinders especially. However that might be outweighed by the ability to check exposure on the spot... I'd say wait a while and get a second hand 5D, though to be honest I'm not really feeling the canon digital bodies. maybe they'll bring something out to compete directly with the D200?

true to a certain extent but the 30d has spot metering and a much bigger LCD. i've also heard the 10d has more noise than its tw successors but the quality/clarity of detail is higher... a pay-off.

to be honest my two main reasons for buiying one would be exposure check on spot and auto-white balance for jobs. other than that i need to be assured the performance, build quality and feel would approach the 1v even though they're wouldn't match it.

i'm unlikely to get one yet but i do go through these phases.

It doesn't. Canon has spent the bees on the winning the meagpixel count wars and noise suppression. Build quality is more akin to your Eos 10/ 30. I've handled 20Ds a few time and i didn't enjoy it. The bigger screen on the 30D would be a boon, the 20's is small.

As for the detail ting, in real terms the 20/30 will be much better due to the higher pixel count. I imagine folk are suggesting the quality per pixel isn't as good, due to smaller pixels and more aggressive noise suppresion.
