Ok, lots of people seem to be using this phrase these days, which is a bit of a shock to an old traditionalist like me - where the hell does it come from?

Is it another Americanism like "send" ?

Is it cool, or is it cheese?

I think the general use of "bearing down" is to imply something is about to rapidly inflict inself on another thing, can't think of a specific example though.

One of my old faves is when someone is straining hard, gettin' all veiny headed and that, with a general ruddy hue.

All you have to do is say "you goddam red-neck...." in a southern drawl and they are practically guaranteed to blow it and fall off  

Best confined to use on mates only unless you want a good kicking at the crag mind.

Do "power-screams" actually do anything? There's a few guys down the gym who do 'em when doing big squats and that,  and half the time they sound like they're on the vinegar strokes or something. Sorta scares the laydeez down there.
