The lense of a generation?
January 11, 2006, 02:00:12 pm
Y'all, have pretty much decided on Canon eos350d for body, am warned off the 18-55mm lens that you can get bundled - apparently its not great. Theres a Sigma 18-55 thats supposedly better - anyone got an opinion?

(on the choice of lense)

obviously not! got the 18-55mm lens that came bundled - to get me started. Will look to upgrade either when bonus time comes round or if discover hidden photographic genius.

You definately want to upgrade from the kit lens  - at the moment you're carrying around a vastly overpriced and heavy digital compact.

I have the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC, a lens with which I am very happy. It's sharp as a tack and lets in a lot of light, which is important for climbing photos. Not too expensive either, as these things go. Autofocus is slow and noisy compared to the canon lenses though.

The essential lens is the Canon 50mm F1.8: it's small, it's light, it's fast and sharp and it's a great focal length for climbing shots. More importantly it's cheap.

You won't need both of the above though, so choose between keeping the kit lens, and using the 50mm if you want qualiteee, or shelling out for the sigma.

p.s I also have a Sigma 18-50mm F3.5-5.6 DC kicking around. Quality wise it's between your kit lens and the lenses above. Not shit, not great. But it's yours for 40 notes if you want it.

Thanks mate, when I get paid I will probably have that off you. Am contemplating getting a more wide angle lense system. Will keep you posted.

Anybody checked out the 18-200 Sigma? I'm guessing its going to compromise quality like the 'superzooms' for 35mm back in the day.

thats what I understand - that by buying a lense with a great range of focal lengths you will loose quality - is this correct, or is it more to do with maximum apertures?

I got a 12-24mm sigma which is good for climbing pics.

i think there are some massive-range zooms that are optically very good (suposedly) - for example all the fuss over the new nikon 18-200mm, but obviously they aint cheap. i'm not convinced have a massive zoom range is necessarily a good thing, it could make you lazy.
