Summer bouldering
April 16, 2003, 08:44:09 am
Ok, so it's not exactly summer yet, but it certainly will be today....so, what do gritstone boulderers do in the summer?

Is it worth battling the sweaty conditions, and midge-infested bracken to pursue our pastime? I reckon a lot more mountain biking and trips to Wales to sample the high, cooler places when Simon's guide comes out.

What does everyone else do?  Sport climb? DWS? Some Deep Water Bouldering would be cool, but dunno if there is any...

  • Get out to a breezy crag as it gets dark
  • do routes instead
  • do limestone instead

Routes? Pah!  But then maybe I should consider using a rope again, but there's no way I'm going through all the hassle of building up a trad rack again, so that leaves sport or top-roping.

And, not forgetting.... Night-time bouldering - little led headtorch and yer laughing  :D

Dave Graham et al are mad for head torch climbing, they reckon thats where its at.

Me, I now move house to the cave under the Tor until October, when both my tendons and my skin have given in.

I just find the Peak limestone bouldering so uninspiring, but that's party due to my standard as much as anything. There's very little easier stuff about - shame really, I love Crag X coz it's in such a nice place but I can't do anything there....well, maybe a couple of things. Shame there's not more of it about.

I keep meaning to investigate Cales Dale but then I reckon it might be another SSSI.

It's off Lathkill Dale (that's near Monyash - which is near Bakewell  :P ) - I was out walking with the missus and looking up Cales Dale there appeared to be lots of limestone walls without the usual 45 degree sloping grass landing. I was too far away to see if it was the usual choss or not, but it's got to be worth looking into, and I find it hard to believe that the Wye Valley is the only one with climbable limestone in the Peak.

In fact, we (well Fatdoc really) started developing a limestone mini-crag near Ashford on the A6, but was chucked off by the Chatsworth gamekeeper. His letters to Chatsworth Estates on the subject have been ignored I believe.

the fatdoc covered it in around £80 woth of sica as its not the best quality, despite his claim it was me that uncovered this partly secret(well it was eh bubba!) little spot. has to be said my prob Get Off My Land V5 was not that bad
We got kicked off twice by the gamekeeper who was a real twat

Well, it was never much of a secret was it? The first time we looked at it it had some chalk on it and anyway, it's only 10 feet from the A6 !!

Someone has also been digging the cave entrance at the base of it, wonder if they got booted off too?

Fuc*in gamekeepers !*&$!

I've had a look at some of the stuff up on the Snake Pass side of Kinder and whilst there were some problems, it would hardly be worth taking a mat up for. Spoke to Dan Honneyman and he'd done some stuff up there, and some routes for the ..Some Climbers vid.

Apparantly there is stuff on the other side though, but is it ever going to be worth an hours walk for only a few boulders? Unless there's a hidden stash I'd rather go elsewhere.

There certainly is, but you'll have to drive to sunny Dorset to do what I know of.

It's what got me into this ridiculous past-time in the first place.

Stair Hole, August 2000, Blue Sky, high 20s, dropping into the cool water.

I've got better, but I've rarely bettered that experience.

On the subject of Deep Water Bouldering, at certain times (tide dependant) you could shallow-water boulder at Marsden Cove. Only problem is you've got to go to South Shields to get there.

Think it could have been - sort of a field with a limestone edge round the side of it?

Maybe, i never been there (adn help me god i never will) but i think it rings a bell with the guide description.

Anyone else climbed at Kepier? Durham City's premier sandstone venue. Man its hardcore.
