The BIG, Very BIG Boulder Field

Now Bubba and Dave dont get too excited, it may not be that good but should yield some reasonable problems.

We shall be there this evening, you know which space to watch.

I think most of them are boulderable - it's the glorious looking Castle Hill in New Zealand....where there is a hell of a lot of rock - that's one of FatboySlimfast's piccies from his world tour.

Looks like the limestone pavement at the top of Malham.

Just a shame it's limestone, apparantly the climbing isn't as good as it looks......

Check this madness out from Castle Hill:

This is the sort of scale, though this is actually Elephant Rocks.

There's also quite a bit of bold trad there apparantly, including an old John Allen horror from years ago...

I think Ben heason did summert there recently anall, like a bolt-free ascent of some bold E7 thing.

All the bouldering there in Frequent Flyers vid looks superb, but FBSF recconed it wasn't as good as it looked, but kiwi Rich said he thought it was as good climbing as font.

I think the lack of friction is frustrating, but some of the lines look stunning, and the place just looks so beautiful I'd be happy just to hang out there for a while.

I thought some of the bouldering in FF looked great, but some of it looked like horrible power moves between pockets - woulnd't mind trying it out someday though. In the last Lord of the Rings movie, there was a bit in the film where they were on horses going through a similarish looking type of area, but the boulders weren't limestone - that looked wicked....no idea where it was mind...

morning guys, nother busy day for me...........um well maybe not then
That picture of castle hill theres somebody underone of the boulders but you need to enlarge it to see them. There all boulderable just about
Dont think its as good as font, it is good but frustrating. Its like climbing at cragx  in terms of friction but Stanage for features. that picture of the guy jumping, I did the problem that goes up where hes landing, and it was fucking terrifying  transfering from powerful sidepulls to slab with crap footholds and sloping grass underneath!
one thing is for certain the routes at castle hill are fuking aweful in terms of style, thin razor holds or crap slopey monos on vertical to leaning walls with bad bolts or runout gear...mmmmmmm just my thing

I think Castle Hill offers the best bouldering experience on Earth.  The combination of location, climate, shear size, rock quality and climbing style make it (IMHO) superior to Font, Peak or Yorkshire grit or any of the bouldering areas that I've visited in the USA.  Sure - these other spots offer world class bouldering but all lack the combination of qualities that add up to...well...perfection really.

Following that little intro, you wont be surprised to learn that I disagree with FBSF - the climbing is as good as it looks.  There is also much more to the climbing than slopey mantles and slippery slabs - in the same way that Font offers a variety of styles.  You just have to know where to look.........

Anyone seen Contact?

It has its moments.  It was made on a shoe string budget and looks like it.  However, the problems featured are, almost without exception, excellent.

I'd love to go to Castle hill one day cos its looks mental. Its just a fuckin' long way away, I'd have to incorporate it into a holiday with her indoors sort o' thing, teach her to spot etc.

Well last night we went to what we thought was a scattering of boulders on a hillside that may yeild half a dozen or so reasonable problems.

What a shock! it was fucking mega a bit like discovering the lakeside boulders at Widdop but with lots of sit starts.

We're defo going back at the weekend to bag some brilliant looking gems, get a few photos,  then I think soon after Jon will go public on yorkshiregrit.com.

If it's anything like Widdop then you're on to a good one - have you seen the new problem at the new roof crag by Andy Crome?

I've asked this before, but what's the situation regarding the crag opposite Widdop (Scout Crag?) - is it still banned or is it just not as good as it looks?

Seen it and tried it, it's bloody hard!

Who is Andy Crome, is he a local as this crag off the beaten track?

Dunno, but that's not his first new problem in Yorkshire so I'm guessing he's a local....

Not sure Andy Chrome is a local, pretty sure he is/was based in Sheffield.
What you doing on Sat FH you fat punter, as me and Styler are concocting a plan. Are you going to this new place? Can we come? Or is it an over-hyped bag of shite (like all of Yorkshire :) ) and we'd be better off sticking to the quality of the PEAK.

Ha-ha-ha, funny as fuck me...

So it's the big roof tonight for some photos.

That's the problem with living in Sheffield - you have to travel a long way for decent bouldering.
