check
www.videohelp.com
not done it myself so can't recomend any 1 program but I have used this site a lot in the past for some good knowledge. I tend to stay away from the doom9 stuff tho as its rather complex but very good if you can be bothered to learn it all

do you just want to rip to divx or xvid?
if your just want to copy dvd to dvdr then I use dvd decrypter (free) and then compress (if necessary) with dvd2one although there are a lot of one click programs that do this for you. again I've not been bothered to try them out yet

Not DivX but DVDShrink is useful for 'backing up' DVD's

I've used smartripper, and flaskMPEG in the past. Has worked pretty well. Also wrote a little excel spreadsheet for help configuring bitrates and stuff if you want?
