bouldering vs. time
March 07, 2003, 10:27:32 am
I get the impression both here and on RT that a lot of the regulars have quite a lot of disposable time, lots of talk of midweek sessions etc.

I work 9-5 Monday to Friday, climb indoors 3 times during the week and if I am lucky get to climb once rarely twice outside at the weekend. As the evening lengthen I shall be outside midweek also.

So what demands on your time do you have? Full-time jobs, college.
I understand that a lot you are peak based and don't have far to go.

Although  Sheffield based, full-time job in Notts, so don't get to do much in the week, although when the evenings grow longer it'll be easy to drive back to Sheff via the Peak and i'm on flexi-time so can hopefully get a lot of midweek sessions in.
At weekends it's easy coz the Peak crags are 15-30 mins away from home, and yorkshire just over an hour.

Don't do enough training in the week, ususally a few bike rides, a caving trip and one woody session. Trying to get motivated to increase this to two training sessions in the week. Don't like public walls, etc but have got a woodie in my garage which is ok, but not yet great.

I work flexi time mon-fri, so come summer i can fuck off early and hit the crags. Usual weekdays would be 2/3 wall sessions a week, plus other days fingerboarding/weights, but since I've just bought a house need to spend more time sorting shit out its more like 1 session a week plus fingerboard/footless shit/weights. Usually only do 1 day at the weekend generally cos need ot do house stuff wi mi biatch, but get a fair few weekend jaunts like Wales, week in font etc. Also go to steelers matches, but thats only in winter evenings anyway. My main drain on my time is sorting house shit out at the mo.

heres my tip..........
sign on for a few years, make sure you get a unhealthy fear of hard work/career
go to college waste more time
try to get involved in work that inspires you
realise work that inspires you pays jack shit and work in  shop instead
take succession of poorely paid shop jobs rising to top position and still get paid fuck all
take up labouring for a living ,destroy body and wake up one morning realising that your approaching middle age and you have no career/pension/prospects/hope
plenty of time for climbing now........

Jeez FBSF, on the scale of things, you're still young - tell any 50 year old that you don't feel young any more and they'll just laff at you!

Still got plenty of time to sort stuff out, you just got to find something you can handle doing day in day out.
