Me joolys brother is a rugby lad and he has a training dooda poster ting.  it shows a guy doing press ups with his hands on rugby balls.  the wobble of the balls strenghtens your wrists as you push.  it also means that you can do a deeper dip into the space between the balls (oo-er)

Think it's the same as with weights - breathe out when you push up, breathe in when you lower down.

You can also do them by having your legs at a higher elevation than your wrists, on a chair for example, now that puts a huge amount of stress on your back shoulders etc. I forget which, its a bit of a bugger to get balanced though.

i've done soem with feet up on a gym ball, supposedly it means you can't favour one particular arm cos otherwise you'll balance off. desperate to get on in the first place though.

get some press up bars, they're cheap as chips and let you go down deeper for a more hardcore pushup. your wrists are also straight cos your hands aren't flat, so they won't hurt. they're mint for wrists, arms, chest, shoulders, back and abs. doing them with your legs and feet raised will work your shoulders more. try some on your fingers/ fingertips if you're double hard (im not)

don't try/do any on your fingertips. this does not aid climbing but more knackers the fingers

Also use your hands on a gym ball, all that wobbling gets the little muscles working as well.
