Tunes at the crag?
November 30, 2024, 09:26:32 pm

Are we cool with bluetooth speakers at the crag these days?!

Where's Cedric Lachat when we need him?

The battle is surely lost among Americans. Think it's still there to be won here though!

I’ve yet to see one in the UK, where have you had the displease of encountering them?

Been trying to work out what the best way to say ‘please turn your music off’ is without just sounding like a grumpy old man (which I am).

I've just said it directly, whilst emphasising it's nice to be out enjoying the sounds of nature etc etc.

It is a totally fucking naff thing to have on the go at the crag. Cunt behaviour for cunts.

Mainly in the south west (e.g. Ogmore, Dinas, Tintagel) but also noticed it elsewhere (e.g. Anston, Stanage). Not seen it yet since Ive moved to Glasgow though which is nice (ignoring non-climbers at Dumbarton).

Sadly a losing battle

I’m no fan of music at a crag either and wouldn’t ever play it myself. But the attitude and language of some people on here about other people enjoying a day out climbing is quite something. Let’s try tone it down please.

Im not a fan of it but if it doesnt impact me (e.g. someone at a crag alone/not forcing it on others) then go ahead! I have a friend who likes to listen to the cricket at more remote spots 😂

Same. I was at a block and two fellas came up and put their pads down and turned their speaker on. I hesitated but decided to tell them that it's considered pretty poor to play music at the crag and they did turn it off to be fair (they also left lol)

The final frontier is people playing videos on their phone in public without headphones.

And people having a phone call on speakerphone in a public place. Obviously you can't hear anything because there's other people around, so you turn up the volume? Instead of just using your phone like any normal person and putting it next to your fucking ear like we've been doing since 1876, because that sound is intended for your ear and not everyone else who happens to be stood next to you.

This absolutely fascinates me. You see people walking along, basically shouting into their phone. It's like the Fast show sketch. How and why did this this fashion for speakerphone calls begin?

Whilst you brought up Kai's channel, I've been meaning to post somewhere on UKB about his working sessions on Shaolin 9A, for anyone interested in seeing more of that climb

I'm not sure these videos are considered quality, but low key working sessions are easily my favourite type climbing media to consume nowadays.

Are we cool with bluetooth speakers at the crag these days?!
Out in the desert, on your own? I doubt the rattlesnakes find it any more disturbing than the presence of the climber. In this instance it seems no more or less objectionable than listening to music on earphones at the crag. In a UK context though you are far more likely to be disturbing wildlife and spoiling other people's day.
The real issue I'd say is featuring it on a youtube vid. Effectively he is no longer alone at the crag and is normalising the practice in a way that is likely to result in more people doing it in more objectionable ways.

Yes this is where my issue lies really in this case, the normalisation. I’m sure there’s lots of stuff that gets done regularly, like that Vastervik vid where someone’s using a blowtorch to dry holds, but they don’t need to be put out to the wider climbing audience!

I unfortunately have to do this with my work phone. The speaker for my ear is broken so the volume is impossible to hear anywhere that isn't a library, therefore I always have to use it on speakerphone. Frustrating but unfortunately necessary as a result. Where possible if I'm inside then I'll go outside but otherwise there isn't a lot else that can be done.

Ha, I have the opposite problem- the ear speaker works fine but the other speaker is broken. This also means I can't watch TikToks out loud on the train anymore.  :devil-smiley:

I blame the Apprentice......, a group of t**ts clustered round a phone in the back on an MPV arguing over whatever mundane task they had to do next.

Only had to do it a couple of times and have opened with, " I realise this makes me sound like a grumpy old man but.....". One occasion they just grumpily turned it off and left shortly after, the other ended up in a good conversation/debate in which they were just "replicating the wall experience outdoors" and came round to the idea of the peace and quiet, experiencing nature, not impacting on other people (climber and non-climbers) etc.

In the summer I asked a couple of guys at Raven Tor to turn their music down "because it projects right down the valley due to the shape of the cliff" they turned it off. All very civilised though I did feel like a bit of a dick.

It's like the Fast show Trigger Happy TV sketch.

Sorry.

(We randomly bumped into Dom Joly at Kaikoura in NZ, he made a joke that I embarrassingly didn't get).

Who cares as-long as no one else is about and it’s not going to offend any local houses?

If someone else is at crag then its a no.

I've come across it twice in the last 12 months in Northumberland having never come across it before, once by someone who has there own YouTube channel. Told them its not acceptable in the county and they turned it off. I have no problem being thought of as a grumpy old man. I cant stand it in public anywhere, especially on trains and will confront people.

I don't get the whole headphone thing when out in the countryside, seems to be missing the point. People had ear buds in climbing at kyloe on Saturday and were part of a friendly group, had to keep taking them out and asking people to repeat things. Fucking stupid.
