basically most people doing HDRs for the sake of it go way to far and as a result it tends to look plain wrong. Even though your eye can see like 24 stops of brightness you still see black shaddows and white highlights, both of which are generally lacking in HDR shots, various shades of grey being substituted instead. so that church shot above looks wrong to me because I know what the inside of a church looks like, and I know that shadows look darker than that, and that the filaments of lights always look bright white regardless. also HDRs tend to have other sideeffects like grossly OTT basic saturation, light halos around objects, things the brain knows are in shadow looking lighter than where the highlights are supposed to be etc etc. To the casual observer who doesn't look at photos critically very often, or knows how various scenes photograph from taking lots of photos themselves, HDRs might not look to offensive, but once you know what you're looking at its like being kicked in the face repeatedly.

Also, if you're someone who's prone to overdoing HDR you're probably also kicking the saturation up to 11 and commiting various other photoshop crimes into the bargain too.

:read: :rtfm: <--- Clickety click

Lets not sully this thread further with anymore HDR abominations, after all there is the Photoshop Hall of Shame thread already.

it looks like a cheap transfer on some 70's ceramic tat.

True, the latest "new" thing leaves the photos looking like they were taken with my old Kodak instamatic from the early 80s.

Loving the aurorae (? i think that's the plural).

Not seen any up here yet, bloody aberdeen light pollution. Guy I know lives in Banff (the original one) and has a house on the cliffs and sees them occasionally).

  they're very cool!

Perhaps the plural is "Aurora(e) boreali"?

I found out the other day that my mate in London has moved to Bellenden Road.

If I don't get a photo with me strategically positioned for maximum hilarity next time I'm down, I'll be doing something wrong.

Not quite sure how I made the connection, it was possibly the "strategically positioned" part, but this reminded me of a fun day out we had at Chatsworth a month or so ago (not my pic...nore me, and probably not quality either, at least its not HDR!)

Can we post frivolity in the "non quality non climbing pics" topic please?

This topic is meant for actual quality pics, not funnies :)

and after pointing out the exact same thing with regards to HDR, what a hypocrite I am.  I blame it on the beer.

It's a beluga whale isn't it (partial to caviar?).

Top one is cool.

Not sure, I've only got one book on whales and dolphins and its on societal systems/behavioural aspects.  Telegraph had it labelled as a whale, but I noticed the teeth (hence the Odontoceti which means "toothed whales"), but then killer whales have teeth   Been too long since I studied taxonomy.

Google images says yes.

Saw some at Vancouver Aquarium, plus a yound calf, very "cute" (as cute as something double my weight can be anyway).

We need some riots so I can get some decent pictures  :) (perhaps the proposed inflation busting 8% rise to fares on Sheffield's First Mainline  :-\ )

Anyway, here's some cool lightening in Bangkok...
