Glen Lednock
August 19, 2021, 07:28:18 pm
Just moved to Edinburgh and thinking of checking out Glen Lednock for a session.
I see there’s a topo online from about ten years ago but wondering if anyone has any more up-to-date info worth sharing around further development or access (plus if it’s worth the visit!)?
Thanks!

Pretty sure there was some good stuff developed up and right of the dam. Also pretty sure it's a dam long walk now the road is closed to traffic.  I used the old topo years ago and there was decent stuff to be found for sure. Maybe Andy_E and the new scottish bouldering site will know more?!

you mean this one? https://www.scottishclimbs.com/wiki/Glen_Lednock__Dam_Boulders.html ?

Will probably do you for a first visit, but I think the even the latest Watson guide is more up to date, but you have more chance of finding things with the online one!

Be aware the parking is now shared by Munro Baggers accessing Ben Chonzie, so might get a bit busy on weekends.

Nothing new in terms of topos but there's been a fair bit of development since the last Boulder Scotland was released, especially at the Balnacoul Castle boulders, where people like Cairo Hazell and David Elder have been adding new hard things. For Lednock dam boulders, there's Kev Howett's old guide here which is probably more user friendly than the scottishclimbs page: https://issuu.com/stonecountry/docs/glen_lednock_mini_guide Any gaps in the guide can be filled in using UKC. Hopefully we'll get a report of new things in that sort of area in the next few months. There's a lot to go at, and Lednock is a stunning spot, especially in the autumn once the leaves begin to change!

Fun easy clip ups at Benny Beg near Creiff too, worth a look if passing.

We were there mid-week a couple of months ago and the parking was rammed then. As SA Chris said, get there early.
The walk in took us about 40 mins but I'm quite slow.
Since parking at the dam was banned, the boulders have seen a loss of popularity and so are getting quite dirty. We didn't check out the stuff on the other side of the dam.
We had a Topo from John Watson that was pretty good and easy to find things.Maybe try emailing him at Boulder Scotland/Stone Country?

Right, given commercial guides are more of a labour of love in Scotland than any potential market success, what's the  best way of having user generated, free, high quality topos?

How well does 27 crags work for user generated content?

I mean, FFS you can draw a line on a phot with a phone in 2 swipes. Things like Fatmap have 90% of the tech required. Any thoughts?

Don't know, most of the mini guides done locally are in Word, and stuck on Facebook.

PC, how did you get on?

Was there today. Beautiful spot!

Got a few good lines done plus a couple of things to go back for.

Great to be getting to know some new areas. Think I’ll head north next weekend and check out the Ruthven Boulder.
