Julien Nadiras tells us he's made the 2nd ascent of Mauro Calibani's Tonino 78, 8C+, at Meschia. He also tells us the area is now completely closed until 15 November because of the chestnuts.

It's in a chestnut forest and the locals collect them to sell. They don't like climbers fuckin' with their chestnuts so it's banned for a bit every autumn. I'd heard it was fully banned anyway because of dickheads not sticking to paths and leaving shit everywhere, but maybe that's changed now.

How would I know?

All I can say is that Julien is the biggest walking muscle I've ever seen, he looks like he could crush bricks with ease. He says (and when you see his pecs you would have to agree!) that "compression" (slopey ribs, bullworker style stuff) is his forte. And that Mauro is the strongest person he's ever seen in this respect! And that Tonino '78 is pure compression. Make of that what you will  :shock:

the chestnuts are nearly as good an excuse as my mate years ago, when he didn't turn up at the gym. when asked why he said the bulls wouldn't let him out. (he'd moved to a small farm a couple of months earlier)
