Grampians Access Issues
March 17, 2019, 04:09:54 am
I'm sure most of you have seen something about this.

Long story short, Parks Victoria are blanket banning climbing in most of the Grampians National Park.

No consultation, no clear communication, rangers fining people at areas that Parks Vic press release have said we can climb at.

Some of those bans are in really strange places, with no vegetation or aboriginal art. The reasons behind the bans seem very vague and I imagine the whole thing is super frustrating for the locals.

I'm glad we have the BMC in this country. Sounds like Gramps climbers are starting to organise and are trying to begin a dialogue with the park management. I hope it works.

Update from Simon Carter. Sounds like a right stitch-up.

Whole thing is mental, seems like the type of bureaucracy you'd get in a 3rd World Country.

I must admit I've not been following this very closely, but why can't these decisions be judicially reviewed? Legal costs would have to be crowdsourced, but I'm sure it's possible. Sounds like there would be plenty of ammo.

Edit: a quick google reveals JR has been threatened and may be underway.

Such a clusterfuck, this whole thing. I for one would contribute to a judicial review fund.

I would love to go climbing there again but currently would be reticent about booking a trip.

I follow the Grampians situation very closely as British Columbia has similar issues. Regrettably the politics of indigenous issues are so toxic, especially once aired on social media, that climbers in Victoria have already been fighting amongst themselves as to whether their initial strident response to the access issues was making them look like racists/ colonists. There was an emergency meeting of the access coalition, just a month or so ago, where the president of the group, Mike Tomkins, only narrowly survived a no-confidence resolution. (Simon Carter did a great job of rallying international support for Mike.)
