External HDD beta
September 26, 2018, 10:20:49 am
Hi all,

I'm after two 2TB external hard drives but know nothing about brands, reliability and longevity. Any tips/tip-offs greatly appreciated!

This doesn't really answer your questions but...

I've got two Western Digital 2TB HDs. One that requires an external power cable, one that's powered from the computer. The former has a fan that's so loud I really hate having it connected for more than a minute. Just something to bear in mind.

Aye but it's useful! I should have said, a lightweight, portable one powered from the PC is the sort I'm after.

What's it for? Assuming nothing too special then Id just go with a couple of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00TKFEE5S/ref=twister_B07HNGP2J1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Just backing shit up really. I'd seen that but had heard stories about Seagate longevity/reliability issues.

imo it's not worth worrying about, and if it really is a concern then just spend another £60 on another drive for some extra redundancy.

I've had an external electrically powered Seagate one for about 4 years with no issues.

Just got a computer  powered Toshiba one as extra backup recently, seems fine too, maybe feels a bit more robust and compact than the seagate one.

I think I spent £60 for 4 years of onedrive (and all the office apps) with 1TB of storage - as part of an offer for those in HE. (as an alternative)

I get 1TB of onedrive storage with my uni account but it's painfully slow to sync it all. That's the only thing that puts me off, otherwise it would be ideal!

If you intend carrying it around a lot, definitely get a padded hard case for a tenner or so.

Have you got access to the supercomputer Andy?? I just keep all my big results on there and have the filename automatically changed every day to bypass the 28 day delete bot.
