Shetland bouldering
September 25, 2004, 08:25:50 pm
Thought I'd draw peoples attention to a new area of the UK being climbed. Shetland has a huge amount of rock, mainly granite and limestone with some sandstone. There are some great areas and small bouldering spots are plenty. A small group of climbers have formed this year and we are gradually finding and developing new spots. There is now a website that will keep updated on new routes and problems as they are climbed...

Take a look at www.climbshetland.co.uk

Sounds like it could be cool.

However in the time it takes to get up there, I could have gone to font for a whole week and back again...

Sorry about the lack of photos on the site at the mo... I'm on the case now! That place is a new pile of boulders on top of a hill, very impressive and loads to be going at. Currently a bit covered in lichen but we've had 3 full days there with a decent group of us so we're gradually making it climbable.

Shetlands are past Orkney by about 150 miles, so quite a way. 1 hr on the plane from Aberdeen though...

Would you need a car to get around once you are there, if you flew in? Or would a hire car be necessary.  Looks like a nice option for somewhere different.

Yeah you do need a car up here... hire is reasonable though. I never hire one but have my bro up here so can get around that way. More photos coming on the website tomorow...
