Summer bouldering destinations in a van
April 04, 2017, 03:08:32 pm
Looking for some ideas for a summer bouldering destination (July time), most likely Europe.

Been to Ailefroide, not massively psyched to return.

Val di Mello / Val Masino likely to be too hot.

Magic wood is probably the obvious choice but wondering what the other options might be.

Would it be the right time of year for Scandanavia - thinking Vastervik etc?

Some of the really high alpine stuff in Switzerland, like Sustenpass or something like Silvapark in Austria?

  • Getting fatter, not fitter.
You could base in MW and go to Sustenpass for the day it's okay. Sharp though. MW is better.

+1 for Lofoten (guidebook  @ https://lofotenbouldering.com/ ). In combination with stop at Harbak? https://27crags.com/crags/harbak

Southern scandinavia can well be too hot.

Thanks. Lofoten was on the radar but I wasn't aware of Harbak.

Any suggestions on logistics? There don't seem to be any decent ferry routes, so I guess it's cross the channel coupled with a long drive?

Lofoten looks great. You could get your trad rack out there too ;)

I've considered most of these as we're also off to Europe this summer. Silvapark has been discounted for us due to a long steep walk in (not great with a 4 and 6 yr old). Austria relatively cheap as well. Some friends are going to Targasonne. We're having 3 wks in Font and still deliberating over Ailefroide/Vallouise (will be busy) and Annot. My missus has visited the latter and just thought it was a beautiful area, not Alpine but quite high, so possibly doable in the shade. I'm keen as there are some routes. Lofoten would be great as one trip. Also heard good things about Sweden but maybe not in the middle of the summer.

I thought the Norway ferry was back on the cards? Or isn't there some deal where the commercial vessel takes a few cars?

Norway ferry seems dead in the water at the minute. It does not work out commercially so would need subsidising therefore is not going to happen unless its really important to the Scandies.

The Dolomites - Citta Dei Sassi. Not world class, but the other climbing around is...

We drove up to Norway in a van last summer. Mainly for Flatanger but also did some bouldering at Harbak and Vingsand (only a couple hours apart). There's not loads at either but whats there is really high quality. Worth stopping at on the way to Lofoten but not worth the drive on their own. We took the ferry to France and drove up from there, took three days.
