CWIF 2017
March 15, 2017, 01:52:06 pm
So CWIM CWIF is on this weekend. Can't be arsed with getting there 6 hours early to get a decent spek.

Good job there is a live feed

So...

Will kickboxing poster child Gus be on the wheels of steel?
Will Jimmy "I've learned to shape my beard and thus it's no longer the worst one in climbing" Webb be there?

We have 5 out of last years male finalists, with Jan being the one missing. But we do have Jongwon and Mr Kruder.

Have to say I thought coverage of the semis was brilliant. Will be tuning in for the final for sure.

me and the kids watched a bit of the semis - I liked Shauna's commentary about problems she had actually been on

the kids wanted to see her doing the problems

overall -  ACE!

Don't like the new IFSC timing rule, prefer the old rule for finals (where you can climb as long as you want if you pull on before the time runs out)

First time watched a live-streamed comp from beginning to end. Even had it the laptop on whilst we had dinner. Shauna will be a great commentator when she steps down.

Nice work Graeme and crew :clap2:

Brilliant comp. Really enjoyed both semis and finals. Cheers to organisers!

Totally agree about the new timing rule. What is the thinking behind this? Some of the most memorable comp moments are when problems get done outside the time limit and it seems a bit harsh to make the climbers come down when they're half way up!

Also, what is the thinking behind top-attempts at top-bonuses-attempts at bonus? I have always felt that tops-bonuses-attempts on tops-attempts on bonuses would give a better representation of who performed better in the comp. For example it was pretty obvious today that Chon was the best climber..

Don't like the new IFSC timing rule, prefer the old rule for finals (where you can climb as long as you want if you pull on before the time runs out)

especially where there are vert or slab problems that don't sap power, so the climber can be on the problem for a while working it out after having loads of goes sorting the start

Mccoll said earlier when we asked that it was largely TV driven, I assume so they can be more confident of fitting it in a scheduled block. He also said it doesn't change much for the athletes, does more to affect the show element

Only watched the finals but agree that it was very well done!

Best Bits;

- Mel winning and being generally hot
- Thought Gaz commented well
- The build up with short conversation pieces interspersed with pre-recorded footage was great. Saved any awkward filling of time
- The problems looked great
- The line up - superstars everywhere!

Minor Gripes;

- Lighting could be a bit better to the left of the comp wall
- New 4 minute rule. I can see that it may lead to exciting moments and fits in with scheduling but think the comps will be poorer for it over all

Great effort to all involved! Might be arsed trying to get VIP seats next year!

soz missed all this, whats the new rules? used to be 4 minutes plus IIRC - is it now 5 minutes dead or 4 minutes dead? If 4 I can't see how that doesn't change much for the athletes, takes ~ 30 sec off usable time??

You have to complete the problem within the 4 minutes whereas before, once you were on the problem, you could stay on indefinitely...

Yeah guessed as much, seems a big change for the climbers then.

Yeah men's routes in final possibly a half notch too hard.

Agree with Fatneck about the lighting on the far left, the mens slab / very prob was just about in darkness at the top.

Good to watch on YouTube with the 10 second skip function

Its not too hard to get a good view. I have been to watch semis and finals the past two years and have only arrived around an hour before the published start time. It easiest to get a good view if you're willing to stand near the back.

Would Chon have won on a hold count? He looked on another level to the other competitors including (an injured) Legos.

Now I've worked out what you mean, I agree. I thought With one top each but more bonuses, Chon would be the winner. So, do bonuses only count to split the result when the number of tops and attempts are the same?

Not that I know anything about this, but someone one UKC was saying this is the case. Results are based on tops/attempts and bonus' are only used in the event of a tie.

The original and much more correct name for a Bonus hold is a tie break hold so yes they are only used to break ties.

Counting holds doesn't work as boulders have different numbers of holds.

Finals looked awesome, really enjoyed the live stream.

Could the BMC take a similar approach to streaming the BBC/ BICCs in future?
