anyone got a stump grinder I can borrow?
December 10, 2016, 05:33:00 pm
bit of a long shot...

my father in-law has a couple of tree stumps that need removing and has asked for my assistance

so I thought I'd ask on here to see if anyone has a stump grinder that I could borrow (in return for a bottle of wine or some beers, of course)

we're in Sheffield

not sure what his time frame is

cheers

I was hoping that Miles Gibson would have one but he said it was a specialist and potentially hazardous exercise and he recommended Peter at Stumpbusters 07746215210 who seemed fairly inexpensive - two stumps at different properties for £100 IIRC

Speaking as an experienced Stump grinder, my advice is don't try it yourself!

These things are lethal potentially, and you really do need to know what you are doing. Flying debris is a major risk, I've been hit in the face once, and hit in the legs countless times.

The pedestrian type ones also have a habit of lurching forward quite violently. Plus all the other stuff like buried cables/pipes etc. Definitely a job for the  pros.

Lagers, speak to Nick at Sheffield Tree Care (where you were getting logs). They did mine for me.

The machines do look pretty lethal!

The machines do look pretty lethal!

but that's what makes them so appealing!

thanks for the advice everyone - I'll pass it on to the father in-law - he may be keen on avoiding spending money, but I think he's equally interested in retaining all his limbs

my preference was for getting hold of some dynamite and doing some WW1 reenactment, but this has proved difficult to arrange

Another thought. If you have a skip then the driver can sometimes be bribed to haul the stump out assuming it is in accessible position and there is enough of a stump to get the chain around
