Wet weather Fontainebleau
March 22, 2016, 09:43:08 pm
Hey all. Off to font next week and the forecast so far is  :jaw: horrendous. Which leads me to these questions:

Which areas are fast drying?
Which problems with doing upto 7aish stay dry in light rain?
What the devil does one do on a rainy day in paradise?

 :wall: :wall:

Thanks all!

Quick drying: Gorge aux Chats, Cul de Chein, 95.2, Elephant, Bas Cuvier.

This stays dry in the rain (except the topout, but the dyno is the good bit):

Drink.

Hope the forecast improves for you.

Just follow the forecast on google weather. We found it really accurate, such that we even had a two hour session 6 till 8 one evening after a whole day of rain. We also bought a tarp that trip and put it over carnage Boulder, that didn't really work...

Cut your losses and go north wales for a week. Save your self a load in petrol and possibly get a refund for your ferry tickets....just an idea its what i would probably do

If you're asking those questions I'm sure you'll find something to do. Stuff like L'Angle Ben's dries in about 5 minutes. Though I admit the temps are a bit of a worry i.e. goptastic.

My standard Font wet weather

Head to milly la foret get some pastries, go to a cafe, look out the window and discuss if anywhere will be dry yet as soon as the rain stops.
Alternate plan if at bas cuvier sort of area when it rains head to carrefour stock up booze walk around the shops discussing if you think it will be dry yet.

Parts of cuvier dry in about 30 mins. elephant drys fast but its very soft so check the problems properly dry before you climb.

It must be bad if you're considering North Wales as a drier option!

climbing gyms: if you're there, you're desperate to climb and everything is wet...

KARMA
Route Militaire, 77300 Fontainebleau
mixed bouldering and rope.
Did not climb but had a visit... the routes looked more inspiring than the bouldering wall. The real treat would be to climb on the french national team bouldering wall, which looks mental... but unless you are one of the 30 best french competitors, you can't.

BLOCK'OUT 3
20-22 Rue du Cantal, 91090 Lisses
20 minutes from the forest, very nice bouldering wall with quality holds and setting.

Is usually accurate. Monday is still a way off. Doesn't look great for the weekend.

No forecast is accurate for Font unless there is an obvious, prolonged period of sun/torrential rain.
In fact even then, you can be looking at a forecast that tells you it's sunny where you are at that very instant and be stood in cloud/fog/rain.
Similarly you can drive 20 mins across the forest and have totally different weather.

Just forget about the forecast, go to Font and enjoy the climbing/beer/pain-au-almond-au-chocolat - they're all really fucking good

Or organise a fell running comp.

Stay at maisonbleau, Neil Hart's place. There is a woody/ finger board there, so if it is really tipping it down at least you won't get weak... Also English TV/DVD player so no need for any cultural French stuff. Nicer rooms/kitchen than my actual house, which is a bit sad.

Pictures on the website. http://maisonbleau.com

Gee weather doesn't look that bad to be honest.

Unless the rain is torrential you can usually get something done and even then there is Karma or the carrefour - It seems like it's just going to be showery and cloudy, no?

Or organise a fell running comp.

Run the Sentier de 25 bosses - great route which lets you see the forest in a new light.
Various shorter marked routes and gorgeous running generally, even if there are no bogs.

Then recover the next day by going to Paris/eating pastries/going round the Chateau etc.
^
This is me even when it's sunny.

Weather forecast looks OK to me...I've seen, and been there in a lot worse. Last time I went it was torrential for a week, but we popped down to Saussois for the day and climbed in sun.

I'm not there this easter  :(....

BUT as a concept keep south... very south, from my 20 years of  one week at easter experiences... this works. The rain seems to hit the Cannon / Cuvier areas but the southern areas are oft dry all darn day. I'm not the only one that thinks this, some of the locals I know also think the same.
