First day fail. Sat in a plane. Drank a bottle of wine.
If t took at least 30 minutes you're fine.  ;D

So far so good. An hour's walk yesterday with Mum and GF (does this count?)

No worries. Training For The New Alpinism, Zone 1.

(You are Training For The New Alpinism, right? Apparently the west face of Makalu is a worthy goal)

Managed to scrape 30 mins of walking yesterday, and some vigorous housework. Does playing 15 minutes of fantasy football count as well?

Popped on the scales this morning, makes for bad reading. 13 stone bang on.  :spank:

Time to get keen, and get lean.

I am now  :great:  Is it worth a read for the all-rounder? I'll not be doing nearly so much alpine stuff for the next year or so at least.

Depends what you want I suppose. If you want a solid introduction to the principles of training for endurance sports, combined with some cool interviews with gnarly mountaineering wads, then yes.

I found it an interesting read but not *that* relevant to what I actually want to do, since my main focus isn't long alpine stuff. Otoh I do want to be fit enough to get through the odd long mountain day in the summer, so I do try to keep up some level of aerobic base training, and reading the book led me to shift my focus to quantity over intensity for most of that.

Walked for 2 hours yesterday about 7 miles. Did 50 minutes on the turbo and 20 minutes of Thera band and back exercises today. But the other excesses continue.
Yesterday wine, Pernod and finishing off the White Toberone, I'm just on my first glass of red while the missus is cooking tea.
Does sex count although I'm not sure how you make it last 30 mins.

Tough day training today. 10 min walk to get a takeaway.

What was the takeaway?? This sort of information is crucial.

I'd love to get back down to just 76kg, have gone up to nearly 80kg in the last 2 months despite putting in enough fucking hard work (including double training sessions for 4 days before Xmas and two of the better runs I've managed on Xmas eve and day).

I missed yesterday (did a bouldering session on 30th and short run on 31st), but went for a short run and then indoor bouldering session today. Felt rubbish on both of them but it was sharkathoning regardless.

I hallucinated someone's post on here that was asking if they did two good training sessions one day would that allow them to skip a day. Did someone post that or did I imagine it?? Anyway I think that should be allowed, as long as it's just an adjacent day and the surrounding day's double sharking is two proper sessions of something. It's about the spirit of it not about exact numbers.

If people can post their general dietary progress / top-tips / current successful ideas, that would be nice.

I'm 2 for 2...Depot session New Year's Day, and a 5 mile run today.

Not particularly watching the weight, food or booze intake though, this is more about getting the training habit going again.

With a long weekend trip end of Jan and a Christmas weight belt to work off this sounds like an ideal opportunity. If I fall off the wagon or end January heavier than I start please heckle me (unless I can prove the extra weight is all muscle).

Weigh in on Monday morning will determine the scale of the task ahead.

Agree with habrich that the diet is going to be key so once I'm back at work I will try to log notable failures or (rare) displays of willpower too.

1/1 - an hour or so of lugging around and chopping up wood. Playing with axes is fun. Counterbalanced by too much eating and drinking.
2/1 - Beacon for a wall session. Got pumped on the roof circuits. Still too much food although less bad than yesterday. Winding down the holiday celebrations.

1st: DWS.
2nd: Hour and a half kayak in morning followed by a boulder in early arvo.

Hardly drinking any alcohol or eating too much either.

I think people massively over-focus on exercise for weight-loss and don't pay enough attention to the dietary input side. That is made worse by all the faddy diet books that tell you calories don't matter, etc.

It is very instructive to get on one of those exercise bikes/ treadmills/ stair climbers/ etc, set it to calorie mode and see just how gruelling and tedious it is to "burn" just 200 calories or so - which is equivalent to a small flapjack, a bag of crisps, or a couple of pints (and the couple of pints mean you will almost certainly have the crisps and flapjack too - at least that is how it works for me). Unless you exercise very hard or for a large portion of the day, you are simply not going to get ahead of undisciplined eating/ drinking.
There's always someone who comes along to piss on your chips.

As long as it's low calorie piss you'll be alright.

2 days down, two ticks (1 x weights session, 1 x core and theraband), in spite of awful weather even dragged the kids out for a walk this afternoon as cabin fever was setting in. Horizontal rain and wind, neighbours were just about calling childline. 13st 9.5 this morning, was 13st 4 two weeks before Xmas.

Bravo Chris. On the path to Sharklightenment!

I managed another measly 30-40 mins walk with kids and GF, need to climb though.

Yes but what sort of Thai??

Mmmm Thai is awesome. I reckon Thai salads might be quite healthy particularly if they are so hot your eyes bleed before you can finish a portion.

Gruelling and tedious, most of my gym sessions involve a couple of those plus varying amounts of weights etc. However that's why I asked for personal pro-tips on dietary stuff... Then again this is the sharkathon so exercise is the focus right? Not just about weight loss but all the other myriad benefits of moving.

Anyway, one of my recent innovations is low alcohol beer. I like beer mostly for the crisp refreshing taste and the Sainsburys 0.5% one is actually quite tolerable and clocks in at 86 calories a bottle (somewhat better than the 500 calories Spitfire that Shark was posting pictures off) so you could do 20 mins rowing, have two, and still be in credit...

Also not eating huge portions, I have a habit of cooking too much stuff and it's often too nice to want to leave, but I'm trying to force myself to more these days.

P.S. Was approaching 80kg BEFORE Xmas, this was just after a wall session then a run then a shit and before dinner  :'(

Gonna have to do double tomorrow. All I've managed today is a small breakfast & lunch [good] but mince pie for afternoon snack [irresistibly bad], soup and 2/3s of a small homemade pizza for dinner [good]. But no exercise [ except 3 sets of rotator cuff nonsense].
