Hi peeps

Wasn't sure where to put this thread but here seems logical.

Anyone have any recommendations for long term travel insurance which covers sports (i.e. climbing and skiing).
I'm away for pretty much a year continuously. Most companies have a 90 day limit so been looking at back packing insurance.

A company called insure and go looks pretty decent. Any help appreciated.

Club Alpin Francaise - it's about £140 for the year, covers all sports, anywhere in the world and will repatriate you to the UK if you so wish. I don't think you have to be French resident, but you will need a medical cert and a rudimentary knowledge of French.

If all that is too much hassle the Austrian Alpine Club is much the same, but not such good cover (they used to have a max single tip length, not sure if that still applies)

I didn't have a social security number, but I did have a French address so I'm not sure how it works if you don't.

Insure and go were the best I could find Tom, with pretty much the same requirements as yourself. Every other company I checked tried to charge a fortune once you mentioned climbing.

I used Columbus for a year climbing whilst living in a van.

They covered skiing also but were unable to explain the difference between ski touring and ski mountaineering even though one was covered and one wasn't. Ended up using BMC for the ski season, expensive but paid out without question when my partner had her bag stolen/forgot to put it in the van.

As far as I can tell Columbus no longer covers climbing and insure and go only gives 15 days cover under its hazardous activities add on which covers climbing... So who the fuck insures people for >90 days for climbing?? Anyone know?

BMC?

I got them to cover me for non-work related injuries in my ski season plus climbing at the end of the season, which totalled up about 6 months in the US. This was in 2002 though.

When I looked into the BMC for living in the alps it was ludicrously expensive, and I think it had a 90 day limit again?

I think that as long as you can physically go into a CAF office (i.e. Chamonix), you can get membership & insurance.

I think insure&go is only 90 days, no?

Insure and go do long trips but not with climbing added as far as I can tell, BMC you can no longer remove the 90 day limit it seems...
Have found a few, will post up when I've dug through and worked out who defo covers climbing for long trips at decent rates..

You can get cover for longer trips including various types of climbing (depending on the activity level you select) with Sports Cover Direct. I've used them but not had to claim so cant give any feedback on that.

Think I got a year covering climbing including alpine peaks from Holiday Safe, they seemed OK to deal with.

Thanks Dave,  looked promising but they only cover a maximum single trip of 60 days which won't cover what we need next year unfortunately.
