Albums for a long drive with the kids
July 23, 2015, 09:19:17 pm
Dear Brethren,

Hit me up with some top family tunes to while away the long hours driving down to brittany.

We've already done They might be Giants 'Here comes Science' to death. (But for those of you who haven't, its a cracker).

Merzbow's Venereology is always a firm favourite, especially if the traffic is slow.

Barry Louis Polisar might be a good call. He was on the Juno soundtrack but does a lot of kids songs too.

This is a tune!

Wife reckons this is a winner. Snacktime by Barenaked Ladies

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Snacktime-Barenaked-Ladies/dp/B00525BCU0

Sounds good to me! :-)

If they are bit younger. Me and my brother always liked Don Spencer's songs about Australia wildlife.

keep em coming..  ;D

They're a bit older now - 8 and 9 - so was thinking of stuff like beatles, rolling stones, and dare I say it Queen (never been a fan, but I can see the appeal - we will we will rock you etc etc).

But also some more contemporary stuff - they really like Snow patrol, but thats been over done a bit now.

Needless to say, I'll be stocking up on Radio 4 Podcasts for the times when they've disappeared into Minecraft world.

Mine all sing along to CCWR...

But then they know "Le Mis" off by heart.

Currently the little sods won't stop with the damn "Cups"...

On one 10hr drive to Cornwall with two 7yr olds girls and a 12yr old lad, my mate bought 'The Best of the Wurzels'. We'd happily played Green Day, Metallica, gabber, trance up until then... the kids loved it  ;D

*edited to say he bought it from a garage forecourt on the journey down.

Jacob likes Nic Jones: Penguin eggs and Spiritualized: The Complete Works. But then he hasn't had much choice.

Any Storyteller CDs? Our love Jungle Book, Aladdin and Lion King (I think they were free with Sunday Times a few years back). Got some Pixar ones too, but voices are a bit annoying. Could rip copies if anyone wants them. We've got a Winnie the Pooh one, but guys voice (Bernard Cribbins?) is highly annoying.

I'll second Don Spencer. Happy memories of driving to Wales as a kid singing along :)

My girls loved Don Spencer and Chemical Brothers when they were little (go figure) but the Noodle loves a good story CD. We picked up the complete works of Roald Dahl from somewhere and this has been a big hit...

At that age my daughter was a big fan of the Now thats what I call music albums. Despite listening to those she's quite a fan of Echo and the Bunnymen.
Just play anything if they don't like dads choice just change it.

Audiobooks have been the big hit for our long car journeys. The Harry Potter series is great (get the Stephen Fry ones if you can rather than the Jim Dale ones, as he is shite), Roald Dahl stories are excellent (I can strongly recommend Boy, narrated by Andrew Sachs), plus Lion, Witch & Wardrobe, other classics etc.

We get ours from the local library and borrow for the trip.

If kids get fractious in the back, I find Minor Threat/Fugazi played at ear-splitting volume tends to calm the little darlings down...

Like AndyR says audio books from the library.  Roald Dahl goes down well, The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me read by Hugh Laurie is a riot.  Also recommend some of the Morpurgo classics, Alone on a Wide Wide Sea is a favourite.

My Dad taped the audio from loads of old Mr Men TV shows by putting a little tape recorder next to the TVs speaker.

That music and voice trips me back to an amazing world of eating sandwiches in Welsh car parks while torrential rain hammers outside.

I also feel compelled to post this.
