European Bouldering in December
June 10, 2015, 05:56:26 pm
Hi all,

I thought I'd tap the collective wisdom about which Euro bouldering areas are worthwhile in December - it looks like I'll have a window of few days to use wisely.

Font? Cresciano / Chironico? Brione? Anywhere around Innsbruck or the north of Italy? Anywhere else?

Thanks!

Brione will be snowed out, and possibly Chironico also.
Cresciano is the best bet in terms of quality and quantity. The weather can be more reliable. Font can be amazing. It all comes down to checking the forecast.
North of Italy I don't know... When Ticino is so close...

Nibs, what about Varazze?

Hey sorry for the late reply, I hadn't noticed this one.
Varazze is a bit of an enigma to me.
It's not bad, but I think it's highly overrated due to being basically the only bigger bouldering spot in that part of Italy, and to having been developed by Cristian Core.
There are many many hard problems, and many sectors, but when I've been there I've always found myself trying the same stuff. The classics are heavily chalked and they have the tendency to squeeze problems into the tightest bits of rock, so sometimes you find yourself playing with eliminates or defined sequences.
The rock is of different quality, it tends to form small holes and even slopers but also razor sharp holds that tend to break. I think it's serpentinite or something.
December can be very cold and humid (there's a river) and also it could easily snow.
I wouldn't go there.
Really, you can't beat Swizzy. Oh well you can, if you come to my board.

Thanks all.

I've decided to err on the side of caution and managed to convince my better half to spend 5 days in Swizzy. Swiss grades vs. Nibs board  ;)
