Shoes recomendation
March 28, 2015, 12:25:14 pm
After some mid to low price shoes to clip onto my Shimano A530 SPD pedals.
Want something that is more geared towards pedaling rather than walking but obviously would still like to be able to walk in them
After some specific recomendation not just "go to decathlon" etc...

How much do you want to spend, mid ranges these days could be £150.
The best way might be to try some on in big cycle superstore, then get them from wiggle or chainreaction.

These are a bargain if you've got feet that aren't too wide and you take one of the few remaining sizes : https://www.cyclestore.co.uk/specialized_bg_rime_mtb_shoe_2014-ID_53789 I've just had my first couple of rides in these - solid pedaling platform, easy to walk in and better ventilated than they look

If you've larger or wider feet then you might find something here http://startcycles.co.uk/clothing/footwear/mountain.html?dir=asc&order=price but I don't know how Scott shoes size up

I got these
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-xc30-spd-mountain-bike-shoes/ last year (now replaced by http://www.evanscycles.com/products/shimano/xc31-cyclocross-shoe-ec069337 ?)
they were some of the cheapest, don't look too ridiculous, fit me well and are also ok for walking (a bit) in.
The man in the shop also said, through economies of scale, Shimano, who sell a lot of shoes, offer good value for the money in terms of quality of shoe at the various price points (this could obviously be a lie but he was suggesting these over Evans own brand  (Louis Garneau sp?) which he said were shit so didn't seem interested in the hard sell).
I have worn mine for 30-40 outings so far and have no complaints.
Evans will price match online prices from the major shops and should have them in to try on if you are near an evans.

ended up just getting b'twin 500 mountain bike shoes from good old decathlon.
seem pretty comfy from the off, fairly cheap £45ish, 3 good velcro straps and seem to be able to walk about OK in them.
I avoided the 520 version with the plastic ratchet strap as it didn't seem necessary and had read about them being a bit delicate and breaking.
So far so good and even managed to do my first ride with cleats on without taking a punter fall!

:)

If  those SPDs with adjustable springs, set them to lowest setting. If you come out of them unintentionally tweak it up a bit. I've got mine set on lowest and never needed to up it at all.

Cheers Chris,  that's what I'd done after someone had recommended doing that on a YouTube bid I had watched
