Rug Rat Rant

Is there any sound more unnerving than a small child right underneath you just as you're about to launch a low percentage dyno?

Parents who think a bouldering room is a suitable toddlers' playroom - when there is a clearly marked toddlers' playroom right next fucking door, cretins - should be fucking shot.

I almost got thrown out of the eica for launching a toddler out of the way of Mrs rodma.

Full on incident involving firstly being told of by the staff for stopping the child from getting crushed and then getting told off for not going and explaining to the parent that their tiddler shouldn't be running around on the mats (underneath people ) , which is surely the job of the staff.

I only just managed to bite my tongue enough to prevent permanent ejection from the centre, but almost all of my bad experiences have been there. It's like no one gives a toss of little tarquin gets squished, but throw him several metres horizontally and it all kicks off real quick.

Which antagonists would you say this was working? How many reps?

I couldn't really tell if it was me or the staff that was the antagonist. Probably depends on your point of view :p

Honestly, the staff.

We get more kids than the average wall, I would guess and it's a nightmare.
I would not have blamed you, in that situation and if any of my staff had, I would have been a tad pissed off.

Getting parents to understand is difficult, but kids are kids.

We got bollocked down at the Barn a couple weeks ago. My four all know how you are supposed to behave, they are at the wall almost every day, little bastards still decided to sprit around the mats like puppies on Acid; every time we blinked...

It's terrifying isn't it? Before they built the mini-works it was starting to be a problem. Almost got into a fist fight with an angry parent after we escorted his 4 year old from under the wall to somewhere safer - the moron was of the opinion that the child would learn to take more care if they were fallen on! To be fair, once I told the desk staff they ejected the knobber straight off.

It's going to end in tears at some point.

I had a very close call a couple of weeks ago that was admittedly somewhat more my fault. One of my local walls has two kids' rooms - a full-on toddlers' play room, and another one for kids who actually want to boulder. The actual bouldering one is a bit lower than the main walls and they make sure they don't set anything reachy, but other than that the problems are the same circuits/colours/grades as the rest of the place.

That sort of things tends to suit me: small holds, no big moves, more tenacity than dynamism called for etc. - and I was with my son who was working his proj in the room at the time. So there I am, in mid air having just fallen off a 6B arete, and girl of about six runs past underneath me completely oblivious. Half a second later would have been bad, and people could have argued I really shouldn't have been trying something hard in a busy kid's room, and they would have had a point.

I hate them all. Especially if they steal my sandwiches.

My worst experience was a climbing wall in an old oil storage tank in Darwin, NT. Not only was it c.35 degrees inside (and chalk was banned) but there was a full on kids party (c.50) in full effect. I found the most deserted corner possible to appease my sociopath tendencies, but still had to stop mid way through a problem as a child was right underneath me gawping upwards...

To be fair to those running Logport wall, they have alot of parties/kids groups and they always seem to ensure these are pretty well supervised... Only once in many visits have I had to go to the desk and say - can some one sort them out etc..

Unless the parents are involved/climbing/look friendly, I generally go straight to the people running the place rather than talk to the parents first. So that makes me a passive agressive sociopath then ;)
