Good Chinese in West Yorkshire
January 27, 2015, 04:20:08 pm
Since moving to God's Own County in 2007 I have yet to find a really good Chinese. Red Chilli (I think that's what it's called) in Leeds is alright but is a bit big and expensive.
I'm after really good, authentic, Chinese tucker. There is a place in Shipley that does "Pan-Asian" and specialises in serving dishes that British people like to think of as being 'signature' of a particular region (Teryaki, Blackbean Sauce, Pad Thai) - absolutely woeful selection.

Ma Bo's in Liverpool has closed down now I think? I went to Nosh in Beeston on Saturday and it has reignited my yearning for less-than-no-frills decor, incredible-food dining. Chairman Mao's Pork, Dragon Aubergine, eat with your coat on because it's so cold.

Has anybody found one?

Since you mentioned Liverpool, Mr Chilli on Seel Street is fantastic. Just make sure you get the right menu (last time I went we were the only non-Chinese table in the whole place).

machester is where you should be looking, there are some proper places, I can't recall the name of the place I went in last time out ( :alky:) but we had duck feet and other things that aren't usually on the menu and bloody good it was! you just have to overlook plastic table cloths, random seats and not being able to read the menu, but point and nod was about right.

Never -ever - ever - go to Mr Chu's in Hull.

Eating floor scrapings in Frankie and Bennies next door is preferable...

Has China Town in Leeds city centre closed now?  There was a couple of cracking trad places in there; cafe style you got to sit down and try and work out what was going on in the films shown on the big screens.

There is a car park opposite the mandarin and road side parking free after 6. Also a short walk (100m) to the rat and ratchet for a decent pint.
Alternative pre or post meal drinks there is a bar just down the road opposite the police station called bar maroc. Not much to look at from the outside (acouple of knackered doors leading to a stair case). but once you go up the stair and through the doors you get to a fantastic bar
Couple of ales on, good cocktails, good beers in the fridge reasonable top shelf. They make crepes to order and give out free olives.

Just asked around at work the great wall at Brighouse has a good reputation

Do you mean the Chinese places where the Templar pub is? If so no, and the amusingly-named Ho's is still open.

I'd be interested in any Leeds knowledge, me and the missus have been trying to find somewhere good for nice, authentic Chinese in Leeds but never found anything past brightly-coloured all you can eat MSG fests.

okay more research.
I have spoken with a mate that used to work at sulzers in leeds. When they had delegations in from china they sent them to maxi's
http://www.maxi-s.co.uk/
The have a western menu but the will also serve traditional style Chinese.

Another recommendation is yangtsys in liversedge (right by you Tom) http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g528759-d952398-Reviews-The_Yangtze_Chinese-Liversedge_West_Yorkshire_England.html
Mix bag on trip advisor though

Good shout on Maxi's Luke, that's corroborated another tip I've had for the place. As it is I'm playing snooker next door tonight but don't think I'll have time to sample their menu!

Tried the Mandarin for lunch today. A bit underwhelmed (sorry, Luke). Bit of a lacklustre menu, especially at lunchtime.

Food that came out was tasty enough and of course it was dirt cheap so can't complain too much. Not stellar though.

The search continues.
