Hi All

having just been using a sunn bmix on the dirt track for a while, I've just caught onto what's going on with fat bikes. They look like full-on fun. I have seen a couple of cheaper options available (ebay and second hand). Anyone had a go yet?

I'm patiently waiting delivery on a 29+ as well which is a toned down fat bike which I think will be a bit more applicable to most of the riding I do (i.e. not sand or snow).

Been playing on them for a few years now.  It all depends on the type of riding.  On snow single track (not downhill style), they're incredibly fun. 

Hit me with questions if you want more details.  I'm in Alaska, and know the guys who developed the 907 and Fatback brands.

Dom had a loan of one for a few weeks, did a long ride along the beach from Killiney to Wicklow Town. They are brilliant, great fun, I would love one. I had a Kona Wo - the first version, the second is better by all accounts.

I saw one riding down the high street over the weekend, looked a bit odd.  I don't mind odd, it made me smile.  I'll end up eating my words but I think they are a niche niche niche for snow and sand but beyond that I don't think they are worth spending the money on for most of us in the UK.  But I could still fancy a go.

Fat tyres and small wheels were all the rage in DH for about 5 minutes until everyone realised that it was...well...shit.  Sand,  snow,  peat  bogs - there I can see it working. Everywhere else,  why would you possibly want to massively increase your rotating mass? Crap acceleration, crap turning.  Nah,  silly fad imo.

I think I'd go SUP first if punting a grand or so on something unserious... Anyway, fat bikes.

I've had a razz and not been convinced but a mate who's the best technical rider I know is now never off his fatty bombatty. Says his regular enduro type bikes feel flimsy and insecure.  Slow uphill, but then he always was.

What I don't like is the ominous rumbling noise the tyres make over rocks when he's behind me on the downs...

Was meant to be running the High Peak Marathon tonight (start time 11.29pm) but the race was cancelled due to heavy snow in the Peak. Only one thing for it, get the fat bike out and go and test it in the conditions it was designed for. Great fun on a short loop up to Stanage Pole from Hathersage this evening, some pretty deep drifts on the top too to slam in to. Can't say I've got the hang of riding a fat bike in these conditions yet as we don't get them often, but hope to get out again soon on some more snow.
