Could somebody recommend some good introductions to DnB?

My apologies, I haven't been following this thread recently.

Hmmm. What sort of stuff would you like? Do you know any particular style you fancy? Dark? Mellow? Hard? Uplifting? Simple dancefloor? High tech? Would you like general compilations, or more specialised (and usually better albums)?

Well, once again you entice me with the prospect of dark ambient/dark DnB... Also some ravey stuff a bit like Pendulum - Slam!

Ooh dear, I don't think you're going to get any Pendulum recommendations off Fiend!

also came across a Biggie track i'd not heard before - 'party and bullshit'

bonjoy may have a particular affinity for the line "i got the tre duce, and the duce duce in my bubblegoose"

even the biggie smalls raps about geese.

Okay as Ben said I'm unlikely to be recommending any pop music like Pendulum.

The closest that would be tolerable would be: Ed Rush & Optical - Chameleon (Virus) which is pretty ravey and OTT but still enough proper drum&bass elements.

But better, and purer, Blame - 720 Revolutions and Blame - The Turning Point (both 720 Degrees) are two fine CDs for fairly trancey and energetic dnb, the former being particularly good.

Also in the energetic vein, Various - Nu Generation (Infrared) is a high octane mix of slightly harder stuff still with a ravey feel.

For dark dnb, the gnarliest at the moment has to be Ohm Resistance - Forwards In Backwards Time (Ohm), which is proper industrial stuff, with a few great tracks on it.

Another good one is Nphect & Dizplay - Beautiful Bytes (Basswerk) which is consistent well produced dnb with a dark but hi-tech atmosphere. I find it a little samey though.

As a contrast, Fierce - Dominion (Quarantine) has a fairly dark atmosphere on the mix CD in particular, the music is somewhat smoother though.

For older stuff, Various/Manifest - Future Beats Vol 2 (Renegade Hardware) is hard to beat for harder beats, plenty of great tracks on there.

Also as a bridge between the darker sound and ravier sound, it is very well worth checking out Dieselboy - The Dungeonmasters Guide (Human) which is a classy compilation of very fine tracks, and Various - Highly Emotif (Emotif) which is a high octane ride through varying but relentlessly energetic dnb.

Most of these CDs are available at Juno, a few are on Amazon and a few you'll have to hunt around for.

sorry to drag this thread back to Neutral Milk Hotel once again... anyone heard On Avery Island?  Interweb snoopery suggests its a different kettle of fish to In The Aeroplane etc, but would be interested in anyone else's take on it.

Also thanks to whoever recommended The Mountain Goats for his cover of Two Headed Boy

Hi,

Don't know if this has been already mentioned but recently I have been loving Sufjan Stevens' "Come on feel the Illinoise". I was actually recommended it by Amazon when buying Neutral Milk Hotel and thought what the heck live on the edge. Safe to say I have not been disappointed.

Anyway Sufjan Stevens is trying to create an album based on each American state. So far he's managed two in the space of the same number of years. Buy it, it's awesome especially if you do a little bit of research about the things he is singing about.

Couldn't agree more, 'tis a cracking album. I like to listen to it in the car on long journeys.

I've just got Boys and Girls in America by The Hold Steady, and it is slowly taking over my head space. Like a cross between Paul Westerberg/Replacements, Husker Du and Bruce Springsteen. I'd recommend it.

Houdi, where do you find this shit?

Why, the internet, of course!  Glad you like it.

And this weeks slice of tech is Bushby - Regular Service.

If dirty stinking bass is your thing then you need to check out Dillinja and Lemon D, of Valve recordings.
A couple of Londoners who own the largest sound system in the world at 120K watts!!

They played Manchesters Apollo Theatre on friday and it was awesome.

You aint heard DnB untill youve heard the valve sound system.

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent recommendations on this thread . My current favorites are:
The blogariddims05 thing,
CPI - B-Girl set for the Decypher Cru (from one of the linked sites)
Bushby - Regular service (only listened through once so far though)

Mine to add to the list would be:
DJ Shadow - Outsider Mentioned lots on here already. Quite different from his other stuff, and(think someone else said this) doesn't really fit together as an album well, but has some good stuff on there.
Xen Cuts 2 disc collection. Only recently got hold of this but I love it.
Dj Nu Mark -Hands On Excellent funky hiphop, although I'm not too sure about the 'Rappers from around the world' bit near the end.
I also managed to dig out a load of old Mixmag cover cds, which I always thought were excellent. These are my favorites:
Sander Kleinenberg - Nice prog house ish mix
Steve Lawler Tribal house and filthy funk for great outdoors - Title says it all.
Trance n' Bass - Almost certainly too poppy for D n' B guys (fiend) but I'm probably on about my 50th listen
Plump Dj's - Don't remember the name but it was breakbeat. Sadly the Cd is long since dead and only a tape remains.

Thanks again, and keep them coming!

I mentioned this in the thread about partying in Frankfurt but I am so impressed it's getting mentioned in here too. You can listen to various sets of amazing techno by visiting http://www.robert-johnson.de/ and clicking on Programm.

Just choose a date and off you go! This club has decided to stop advertising who is playing because it's not about who's playing the music but simply the music. I think it's a great concept, and it only works because everyone who plays there is fucking excellent. So now you can just listen to what may be coming up at the club. Genius.
